Book Reviews metastable phase that can be separated into two or more phases upon suitable heat treatment. In a soda-lime glass, for example, silica-rich spheres about 1000 A in diameter were found, but X-ray diffraction studies showed no evidence of crystallinity. Thus, as Professor Mackenzie points out, the use of old data to generate new theory is dangerous and must be viewed with extreme caution. Relatively few errors or misprints were noted in addition to those listed on the errata sheet. The majority of the papers are printed in English, with eight in German and four in French. A record of the discussion following each paper is included. The European custom
of writing decimal points as commas is followed. The volume is recommended for its coverage of a wide variety of the latest research methods and techniques, and for the results of such research in the field of glass and amorphous materials, as well as being a source of references to 1964. As such the book will be of great interest to physicists, chemists, and technologists working in this area. The papers in the volume cover a wide range from the theoretical to the empirical. G. W.
