It will not be taken up w i t h original descriptions of n e w o p e r a t i n g instruments, or first s u g g e s t i o n s o f modifications of apparatus. It will explain and describe instruments in t r o d u c i n g n e w principles and m e t h o d s that have already been put b e f o r e the profession, and s e e m to b e of e n o u g h i m p o r t a n c e t o b e u n d e r s t o o d b y all practical o p h t h a l m o l o g i s t s . S o m e m a y b e n e w o n l y in the sense that they have not been g e n e r a l l y un derstood and used. S o m e o f t h e m are likely t o c o m e into general or universal use. O t h e r s furnish the m e a n s of i m portant o b s e r v a t i o n s that m a y be m a d e )y o n l y a f e w skilled o b s e r v e r s , but w h i c h should b e u n d e r s t o o d and a p preciated b y all. Published by Franz D e u t i c k e , L e i p z i g and V i e n n a . The original, German, edition o f this b o o k has already b e e n r e v i e w e d ( A . J. O . , 1924, V . 7, p . 4 0 2 ) . T h e present one is an E n g l i s h translation b y the author, and consists o f forty-four c o l ored plates, c o m p r i s i n g o n e hundred and ninety-one illustrations, with eleven p a g e s o f i n d e x to the illustra tions, the w h o l e b o u n d in cloth. In addition, there is a p o c k e t into w h i c h is slipped the text d e s c r i b i n g the illustrations. T h i s consists of e i g h t y - s e v e n pages, w i t h the i n d e x , w h i c h are b o u n d t o g e t h e r ; but un fortunately it has n o separate b i n d i n g , s o that the printing c o m m e n c e s o n the front c o v e r , and ends o n the inside of the b a c k c o v e r . Much handling, unless it is bound after purchase, will

likely result in tearing o r loss of pages. T h e paper is o f g o o d quality and the p r i n t i n g is clear and easily read. T h e r e are a f e w t y p o g r a p h i c errors, prin cipally in the punctuation, b u t the E n lish is i d i o m a t i c and of a h i g h grade. It is to b e h o p e d that this b o o k re ceives the enthusiastic r e c e p t i o n that its quality and o p p o r t u n e n e s s de serve. Its value can b e n o better ex pressed than b y q u o t i n g the w o r d s of the a u t h o r : " T h i s atlas is especially adapted t o the needs o f the practical o p h t h a l m o l o g i s t , w h o w i l l reach and retain a clearer understanding of the e y e and its diseases t h r o u g h a k n o w l e d g e o f the a n a t o m i c basis of clinical signs and s y m p t o m s .
