We are includini a note about this Conference since Vacuum is an associate member of SIRA and much vacuum work is carried out in SIRA. However, it is appreciated that this meeting is not essentially relevant to vacuum science and technology. A Conference on New Developments in Optics and their Exploitation by Industry will be held on 1lth and 12th April 1967 in t&z Grand Hotel, Eastbourne. It is hoped to include the following subjects: Uses of light for position sensing Transmission of information by light Holography and its possibilities Data processing Optics in the electronics industry (e g microelectronics) Film and photo typesetting Optical requirements in process control Applications of optics in space Optical research at SIRA Research by the optical industry on new techniques and devices Education and training in the use of optical techniques Further information can be obtained from: Miss A E S Mills Head of Publicity and Literature Services Department SIRA South Hill Chislehurst, Kent

1967 thin film conference: properties of thin films
resistive
and dielectric
The Electronics, Electron Microscopy and Analysis and Vacuum Physics Groups of the Institute and Society are arranging a series of annual conferences on the physics of thin films. Each conference is to be of a limited subject content to allow full presentation and discussion of relevant papers. The first of the series will take place in Nottingham on 3, 4 and 5 April 1967 and will deal with the resistive and dielectric properties of thin films, and the dependence of these on film structure and method of preparation. Offers of papers of about 20 minutes presentation time are invited. Titles accompanied with an abstract of not more than 150 words should be sent to the Conference Secretary, Dr R M Hill, Electrical Research Association, Cleeve Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, by 21 January 1967. Subjects of interest will be electrical conduction in continuous, discontinuous and cermet films; dielectric properties of crystalline and amorphous insulating films and the properties of thick films. The Conference Committee will particularly welcome papers relating to the electrical properties of films to their structure. Residential accommodation for the duration of the meeting will be available at Lenton Hall, University of Nottingham. Advance registration for attendance at this meeting will be necessary. Further details and application forms will be available in early January 1967 from the Meetings Officer of the Institute and Society.
of authors
Editor’s note It is hoped that this feature of Vacuum, providing brief particulars of authors for each issue, will be helpful in
promoting awareness of active workers in the various fields of vacuum science and technology. Intending contributors are invited to submit photographs and such brief details as they think are suitable.
A contribution to Frenkel’s theory of condensation Dr G JZinsmeister was born on 4 April 1929 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein and studied physics at the Technical College of Vienna, Austria. In 1955 he joined Balzers Ltd, where he started working on the development of vacuum pumps and components. His present activitv is in the field of thin films.
