Carpenter to qualify new steel alloy for aerospace Carpenter Technology says that it is currently working with a major aerospace manufacturer to qualify a new corrosionresistant, high-strength precipitation hardenable (PH) stainless steel for use in landing gear. CarTech Custom 565 alloy combines properties of CarTech Custom 465 and CarTech Custom 475 to form a new aerospace alloy that could replace Carpenter’s

CarTech 300M alloy steel which is currently being used in landing gear, structural components, drive shafts, and actuators. ‘The potential for CarTech Custom 565 alloy to become the industry choice for specific aerospace applications is excellent,’ claimed Gregory A. Pratt, Carpenter chairman, president and CEO. ‘Our CarTech Custom 465 alloy has been used

in aerostructures for more than 15 years and our goal was to modify the properties to yield a much stronger alloy that also contains the corrosion-resistant properties the aerospace industry demands.’ CarTech Custom 475 alloy is primarily used in sporting goods.Testing is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete. Some of the key changes include: Greater emphasis on building a management system suited to each organization’s particular needs. A requirement that those at the top of an organization be involved and accountable, aligning quality with wider business strategy. Risk-based thinking throughout the standard makes the whole management system a preventive tool and encourages continuous improvement. Less prescriptive requirements for documentation: the organization can

now decide what documented information it needs and what format it should be in. Alignment with other key management system standards through the use of a common structure and core text. ISO 9000, which is also being revised and will be published at the same time, outlines the terms and definitions crucial to understanding ISO 9001.

Major revision to ISO 9001 The British Standards Institution (BSI) has made its first major revision to ISO 9001 since 2000. The 2015 edition of ISO 9001 published in September will contain the new revision. ‘Since 2000 the way we do business has changed enormously,’ the organization said. ‘We all have instant access to information and higher expectations of organizations we work with, while having to deal with more complex supply chains and a globally competitive economy. ISO 9001:2015 has been revised to take this into account.’

ASTM coatings committee honors finishing specialist Retired chemicals expert Donald Snyder has received the Frederick A. Lowenheim Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee B08 on Metallic and Inorganic Coatings. A member of ASTM and Committee B08 since 1975, Snyder was honored for his high

competence and professionalism in the technology of metallic and inorganic finishes. Snyder worked in various managerial roles during a more than 40-year career at Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland, Ohio, starting as research director in 1970.

Outside ASTM, Snyder is a member of the National Association for Surface Finishing, and also serves on the NASF board of directors. ASTM; www.astm.org

Nuclear specialist wins ASTM Award of Merit ASTM International’s committee on metal powders and metal powder products has presented its Award of Merit to Sherri Bingert, senior science advisor to the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. The
