Newto AssistYOU NEW H I G H - P E R F O R M A N C E SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE The ISI Model 60, a new scanning electron microscope, has a guaranteed resolution of 60 A , with 50 A attainable. Magnifications f r o m 10 X to 200,000 X are obtainable in 36 steps, with digital readouts. Accelerating-voltages of 2, 5, 19, 15 and 30 k V are selectable by switch. Lens currents, gun bias-voltage and scan-coil currents are interlinked with the high-voltage selector so that focussing and magnification are unaffected on changing accelerating-voltage.

A dual-magnification display is a special feature of the instrument. A movable electronically generated " v i e w f i n d e r " enables any part of the display on the main viewing-screen to be selected for expanded display on a second screen. The differential magnification ratio ( 2 X , 5 X or 10 X ) i s retained on changing magnification. A third CRT, controllable from either viewing-screen and having 2500 lines to give

ultra-high resolution, is used for photographic recording. Correct exposure of micrographs is achieved by an in-built automatic contrast and brightness setting system. Standard cameras are 35-mm AsahiPentax or 10 cm X 13 cm Polaroid. The instrument's large universal stage allows complete examination of specimens up to 76 mm diameter by 25 mm thick, and can accomodate much larger specimens. Movements are: horizontal (X and Y) + 20 ram; vertical 8--38 mm; tilt --10 ° to + 70°; rotation unlimited. T w o separate signal-processing circuits allow superimposed or side-by-side display of t w o images f r o m different sources. Imageprocessing capabilities include gamma-control, to improve contrast; image inversion, for production of transparencies; differentiation (the differential signal can be mixed in any proportions with the undifferentiated signal); and Y-modulation.
