Federal-Mogul receives 2007 PACE awards Federal-Mogul Corporation received two Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence) Awards at the 2007 ceremony. The two innovative products were the High Temperature Alloy (HTA) exhaust gaskets and the Federal-Mogul Goetze branded Diamond Coating (GDC) for piston rings. The PACE Award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance. The product category winners are innovations in new product development and introduction of processes that have significant market impact and act as game changers in the automotive industry. The HTA exhaust gaskets perform under extreme heat conditions, providing effective solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s emissionscompliant heavy-duty engines. Federal-Mogul GDC for piston rings is made with diamond particles that reduce component wear compared to other coating technologies used for diesel
engines, meeting new US and European emissions standards. ‘At Federal-Mogul we are committed to providing value to our customers through leadingedge technologies and innovations,’ said Ramzi Hermiz, senior vice president, Sealing Systems. ‘The HTA exhaust gaskets were created to withstand high temperatures, resulting from tighter standards. It is an honor to be recognized for the benefit this product provides the market.’ ‘The Powertrain team is very proud to be the PACE recipient for its GDC rings,’ said Rainer Jueckstock, senior vice president, Powertrain. ‘The chrome diamond coating enables our customers to build the next-generation of high-performing, fuelefficient and environmentally-friendly diesel engines for heavy-duty and passenger car applications.’ Contact: Federal-Mogul Corporation, 26555 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48034, USA. New high pressure gas seal introduced
News
John Crane has announced a new high pressure variant of the Type 28EXP dry gas seal. This seal features a silicon carbide running face which is specially designed for current and anticipated high pressure applications. Future requirements for high pressure compressors are expected to continue to increase as re-injection compressor trains are specified with ever increasing pressure requirements. They are expected to play vitally important role in improving oil extraction yields and enabling companies to exploit sour gas sites both safely and efficiently. The emerging carbon sequestration market is also expected to generate increasing demands on the seals. The new ‘hard’ face uses a solid Silicon Carbide material which is then coated with a Diamond Like Coating (DLC). Having developed the new face material the seals were subjected to a rigorous testing programme
In Brief
covering all areas of the operating envelope. The two year development program was followed by a six-month validation process which was developed in close collaboration with GE Oil & Gas in Italy. The objective of the program was to review every aspect of the design, development, and test and evaluation process to understand the capability of the seal and ensure there were no surprises. To ensure impartiality and credibility the entire validation process was independently monitored and approved by ODS, the Lloyds Turbomachinery consultants based in Denmark. The seals successfully completed the trials up to the maximum pressure of 425 bar.
