Preview The short-course programme for 1989 from The Polytechnic of North London, UK, includes a 4-day course on Adhesion and Adhesives to be held on 2 6 - 2 9 June 1989. The course, which aims to provide a basic understanding of adhesion and guidance in the formulation of adhesives, costs £325. If you wish to receive further information and/or reserve places, please contact: Athena Barrett, London School of Polymer Technology, Polytechnic of North London, Holloway Road, London N7 8DB, UK telephone number 0 1 - 6 0 7 2789.
Aravite 3000, a new range of single component industrial cyanoacrylate adhesives, launched by Ciba-Geigy Plastics, UK is solvent-free and claimed to be rapidly polymerising, ensuring fast, strong bonds to most materials in a matter of seconds. Properties claimed by Ciba-Geigy for these products are: Aravite 3001 - - low viscosity and penetrating, fastest acting, capable of bonding aluminium and plastics in 15 s; Aravite 3002 ~ medium viscosity with excellent heat resistance up to 120°C and therefore good for use with ceramics and plastics; Aravite 3003 - - high viscosity, with good water resistance and peel strength, all round adhesive; and Aravite 3004 - - a thick gel for gap filling and bonding porous material. Ciba-Geigy Plastics, Duxford, Cambridge CB2 4QA, UK
New product = New product Three new products, the polyether polyols Baycoll 83, Baycoll 85 and Baycoll 88, have been added to Bayer AG's range of raw materials for low-solvent and solvent-free adhesives. The manufacturer claims that Baycoll 83 is distinguished by exceptional hydrophobicity, which ensures that very little foam is formed in the joint during the setting of the adhesive, while Baycoll 85 and Baycoll 88 have the advantage of giving very flexible bond films. According to Bayer, these products are suitable for use in conjunction with Desmodurf VK or Desmodur VKS as crosslinking agents in low-solvent and solventfree two-pack polyurethane adhesives. These formulations are used mainly in the production of sandwich panels for motor vehicles, car and refrigerated truck bodywork,
and the construction industry, eg for prefabricated wooden structures. Another field of application is the bonding of insulating materials sensitive to solvents. Bayer UK Limited, Bayer House, Strawberry Hill, Newbury, Berkshire RG13 1JA, UK A semi-permanent, acrylic-based adhesive specially designed for low temperature applications has been introduced by Fasson UK. Called FasRoll CT675, Fasson claim it is ideal for applications such as labelling food and deep-frozen products, having excellent conversion characteristics and operating within a service temperature range of - 4 0 ° C to +800C. Fasson UK Ltd, Eastman Way, Hemel Hempstead, Herts HP2 7HE, UK.
The programme has now been finalised for the one-day seminar organised by Rapra Technology Limited and Butterworth Scientific Limited on the Bonding and Repair of Composite Materials and being held on 14 July 1989 at the Metropole Hotel, Birmingham, UK. Topics to be covered include techniques and materials for bonding composites to themselves and to metals, methods for testing bond strength and durability, and repair systems. The programme features speakers from industry, government research centres and academic institutions from the UK, USA and Europe. The fee for the seminar including refreshments and a copy of the proceedings is £ 1 7 0 . 0 0 plus VAT. For further details and a copy of the programme please contact: John Herriott, Butterworth Scientific Limited, PO Box 63, Westbury House, Bury Street, Guildford, GU2 5BH, UK
