New Scanning Spectrometer.--A uniform spectral radiance spectrometer has been delivered to the U. S. Army, it was announced here t o d a y b y International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. The model SF101-UR instrument produces monochromatic radiation of equal energy for the testing of photoemissive surfaces. The constantenergy o u t p u t is contained in the wavelength region between 0.5 and 2.0 microns with an o u t p u t of the order of 10.7 to 10 -8 watts per sq. cent. The instrument scans linearly from 0.35 to 2.0 microns in three wavelength intervals of 0.35 to 1.0, 0.35 to 1.5, and 0.35 to 2.0 microns. These regions can be scanned continuously between 0.02 and 0.2 scan per sec. The model SF101-UR has a 1 per cent or better spectral resolution. Current from a photoemissive surface is measured b y a. picoammeter and m a y be recorded on a paper recorder along with suitable wavelength markers. T h e spectrometer, in addition to a provision for measurement of radiation source energy and spectral calibration, can also be used for testing solid-state optical detectors.

New Vacuum Resistance Furnace.Availability of a new, high temperature, vacuum resistance furnace from N R C E q u i p m e n t Corp., a subsidiary of National Research Corp., has been announced. Described b y N R C as uniquely versatile, the new unit (Model 2940) can be used with various heating elements for melting, alloying, casting, hardening, annealing, sinter-

ing, degassing and other metallurgical operations. The unit is a laboratory furnace for s t u d y and development of new and improved metals and alloys. Major users would be in metals, electronics, electrical, aerospace, and research operations. One of several heating elements can be used according to the size and nature of the operation required including tilt and non-tilt, pour and non-pour functions. The heating element can be removed in 15 minutes. T h e self-contained furnace has all vacuum, electrical and temperature instruments grouped for ease of operations and identification. All controls and gauges are in front of the unit within the operator's line of sight. T h e vacuum furnace area is 18 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. Maximum temperature is 2200 deg. C. Vacuum capability is 10.7 torr. Failsafe features provide maximum protection for equipment and experiments in progress. An automatic shut-off protects the furnace, heater and diffusion pump if the watercooling system fails. The diffusion pump cannot be started unless the holding pump is operating. A lowvoltage power supply (20 KVA step transformer) minimizes the possibility of arcing when metal vapor is present during sintering and other metallurgical operations.
