Typically new turbo pumps from Balzers.

N e w t o w e r packing from Eta Levapak is a completely new concept in the design of random dumped packings and is introduced by Eta. It is manufactured under licence from Dr Max Leva, well known as the originator of the saddle, and is initially available in two sizes, No 1 and No 2, in either plastic or metal. Levapak consists of slotted and tongued, saddle shaped pieces and, thus, provides a strong stable homogeneous packed bed with a high void space and large active surface area. By merit of tongues on one piece being in contact with both the outside surface and tongues of neighbouring pieces a very large number of interstitial transfer points per unit volume is provided accounting for the vastly superior efficiency of the new packing. Levapak is claimed to exhibit some 50-60% reduction in pressure drop and up to 50% improvement in mass transfer when compared with conventional slotted pall rings. Combined with the low cost this represents a major breakthrough in the development of tower packings for all distillation and gas absorption applications Eta Process Plant Limited, The Levels, Brereton, Rugeley, Staffs WS1 5 1RD, UK

Specimen preparation s y s t e m and education

for use in

research

Balzers have extended their EM specimen preparation plants program by a new unit. This easily portable bench-top model is fitted with a turbomolecular pump which produces an extremely clean vacuum. Thus, the BAE 080-T is perfectly suited for a whole series of specimen preparation processes which otherwise would be feasible only with very expensive equipment. A choice among four different glass recipients of NW 80 and NW 120 mm ensures that practically all items of the Balzers Quick Release Flange System can be used. N e w sputtering system for scanning e l e c t r o n microscopy Balzers Union is now introducing a new sputtering system. As a successor to the well known BU sputtering plant. Despit the high 130

sputtering rate, the SEM sample is not heated over 25°C. This important feature is the result of intensive target and spe(~imen stage cooling, and of electron-deflection by means of a new, axially symmetric magnet system. Undesirable oxygen contamination of the specimen surface can be removed with the aid of the etching equipment, which--thanks to a built-in shutter-allows a change-over from etching to sputtering without breaking the vacuum. Moreover, this shutter permits pre-sputtering of hard-to-sputter materials such as Ni or Cr. The water-cooled specimen stage can be infinitely adjusted also during the process, and the measuring head for the BU thin film monitor for gold films (optional) is built in as standard. Pre-selection of the sputtering time is possible. When the process is over, the system is vented automatically and the argon supply is stopped. Other features that should be mentioned are: recorder output of the pressure measurement and glow discharge signals, the use of rapid-change target foils, simple operation, and a pleasant design. N e w 'Century Series' fascia actuators f r o m Schrader A wiae new range of actuators for the manual operation of their pneumatic valves has been introduced by Schrader giving panel and control box designers much greater choice. The new 'Century Series' come in a wide variety of configurations and colours, specifically to actuate the popular Schrader Mini (3/2 M5) and Midget (1/8 BSP 2/2 and 3/2) poppet valves and Midget (1/80 BSP 3/2 and 5/2) spool valves. The range of available units, including square and round push buttons, large emergency stop buttons and selector switches, plus a large range of key switches, gives a choice of more than 100 different actuators to help provide a modern and stylish manual pneumatic control system. The square push buttons are also available with transparent covers to allow the insertion of particular legends when required and as the entire range can be panel mounted, then additional legends plates suitable for panel mounting can be supplied. All the actuators are supplied ready to fit any of the basic body assemblies--comprising the appropriate spring return valves-complete with the actuator adaptor, and the t w o parts simply
