N e w studies report on trends in the adhesives field A recent study relating to the US adhesives and sealants industry suggests that the industry's growth, over 9% during the last decade, is expected to decrease to 7% a year d~e to continued moderate construction, and a sluggish production of vehicles and other durable goods. In the study from Rauch Associates, a marketing consulting and industry information firm, it is said that total adhesive and sealant consumption will increase from $ 8 7 0 0 m m i n 1989 to $12 0 0 0 mm in 1994. Current adhesive sales, including plastic tiecoats, are estimated at $ 6 9 1 5 mm
and 10 500 dry Ibs. According to the Rauch study, such specialty types as engineering or structural adhesives, sealants, hot melts, pressure sensitive adhesives, adhesive films and aerosols consume 37% of total industry production. Adhesives and sealants which are used throughout the industrial, commercial and consumer segments of the economy with the largest market being in wood and related products with 26% of total consumption. The second largest market is industrial assembly which is mainly adhesive textile applications and then all other adhesive and sealants used in
New self-adhesive foam mounting product A design enhancement to the Jaguar X J 4 0 saloon has prompted Fasson to develop a new selfadhesive foam mounting product, which according to Fasson, allows the car builder to escape the corrosion problems and assembly line hiccups associated with mechanical fastenings. The styling modification called for a deeply recessed bright chrome trim to be incorporated around the rear lamp clusters of the 1990 model X J 4 0 - - and for an unseen, trouble-free and cost-effective method of bonding it. However, Fasson say that the obvious choice - - the self-adhesive

solution - - seemed to be ruled out when it was realized that no proprietary foam product existed thick enough to fill the extra-deep recess and so provide an effective bond between trim and lamp. Fasson, who supply a range of functional and decorative selfadhesive products purposedesigned for the automotive industry, created a special doublecoated foam product 2.4 mm thick which, they say, fits perfectly Jaguar's requirements. Code-named FasTape 469, the new double-coated foam is supplied by Fasson to Stafford Rubber of Norton Canes who convert it into shapes diecut to fit the cluster recess. From there it goes to Carello Lighting of Cannock to become part of the complete rear lamp units they supply to Jaguar. FasTape 469, uniquely produced for this application, is one of the 460 series of black foam tapes, a high density, electronically crosslinked closed cell black polyethylene foam coated both sides with an acrylic permanent pressure sensitive adhesive.

the production of manufactured products. The Adhesive and Sealants Guide also describes the current use and consumption of raw materials, and claims to provide a thorough discussion of industry economics, leading producers, recent mergers and acquisitions, distribution and foreign trade. Its Producers section is said to describe the activities of 570 US producers with sales of adhesives and sealants over $1.0 mm. The 274-page guide is available at $ 2 1 5 from: Rauch Associates,
PO Box 6802, Bridgewater, NJ 08807, USA. Two new studies in the areas of radiation curing and pressure sensitive products are to be undertaken by Skeist Incorporated, USA. Radiation Curing III will, say the consultants, provide in-depth information on statistical data on US consumption of radiation-curable materials, by method of application and end use, for 1990 with projections to 1995; technology of ultraviolet and electron beam curing processes, formulations, equipment - - advantages and disadvantages; suppliers and market shares; industry structure; trends, growth rates, opportunities, new materials and processes. Pressure Sensitive Products II it is said will provide comprehensive marketing, technical and economic analyses and forecasts of all significant end uses. According to Skeist Incorporated, pressure sensitive products are a major outlet for adhesives, papers, films, foils, release coatings, etc., and the industry has experienced and should continue to show rapid growth.
