New submission process It is a great pleasure to announce the launch of a new manuscript submission process for LCATS. We have completed our change to the Elsevier Editorial Submission system (EES), and this online system will make the process of manuscript management much easier for the editor. Once an article is submitted into the system by the author, everything is done electronically: the manuscript is assigned to reviewers, the reviewers submit their comments and recommendation into the system, and those comments, along with the editorial decision, are then relayed back to the submitting author. No more need to submit multiple paper copies, no need to copy articles onto a disk, no need to mail anything, etc. It is my hope that the process will prove to be easy for everyone and that the manuscript review process will be much timelier. The LCATS page for the new system can be found at http://ees.elsevier.com/lcats/. As a new user, you will need to register using the option toward the top of the page, and you may also want to read the instructions contained under the “Guide for Authors” section. From that point onward, the submission process should be easy to follow. Immediately upon submission, you will receive a confirmation message and the system will build a PDF of your manuscript. If your paper is accepted for publication, the revision process will also be easily accomplished in EES. I hope you will find this new system easy to use, and I hope to see many articles submitted via EES in the near future. 1. About this issue This issue of LCATS contains a larger than usual number of articles from international authors. The submissions come from Nigeria, from Turkey, from Venezuela, and from points between. Some of these articles are quite specific to the county of authorship, but I believe that by publishing them we can best show the variety of issues we are facing today. The topics also vary widely—everything from book storage systems in Australia to stamp collecting and management in Turkey. There is something for everyone. This increase in international submissions is a mixed blessing; as an editor I very much enjoy seeing this widespread interest in LCATS and am thrilled to see these articles appear in my mailbox, but as an editor I am also 1464-9055/$ - see front matter © 2006 Elsevier Inc. aware that reviewing and editing these submissions can be challenging at times. Many are written in less than standard English, and even those that are often use regional variations of the language. It can be difficult to edit a manuscript for conformance with the LCATS style sheet while still maintaining the color of the submission. I have tried to hold a middle line, changing obvious errors while retaining a sense of the region of the author. I hope you will enjoy reading these slices of reality from various parts of the world.
