Although this book is a sound layperson's manual of cardiovascular disease and prevention, it is clearly not intended to supplant the variety of credible dietary books and pamphlets already available in the market place. The book do es coyer basic nutrition as it relates to heart disease, and it includes a brief summary of the Dietary Guidelines. However, the practical dietary advice is essentially limited to two tables titled "Select Foods From Each of These Food Groups Daily," and "Twenty Ways to Modify a Family Diet." Despite the se shortcomings, 1 highly recommend this book as an information source for inquiring cardiovascular patients. Robert F. Upon reading the title of this book, 1 was immediately skeptical. However, the authors, both of whom are registered dieÜtians, have done their homework. They present a nutritionally balanced, three-meal-a- day convenience diet for busy people. The diet plan of 1200-1500 calories per day includes a choice of over 300 convenience or fast-food meals supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. Each day's intake has been assessed for selected key nutrients: protein (100% of RDA), carbohydrates (% total calories), sodium (less than 3500 mg), and fat (35% or less of total calories). The authors recommend a multi-vitaminmineraI supplement whose nutrient levels do not exceed the RDAs. The book also contains general nutrition information and useful tips for buying fresh produce and storing food. Meal preparation is made "as simple as possible," with no leftovers, so the book is ideal for those who live alone, those who dislike cooking, and dieters who nibble while cleaning up. Frozen entrees can be stocked in the freezer, but shopping for fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy products should be done once a week. The authors suggest preparing enough tossed salad to last for several days. While this practice will reduce

meal preparation time, sorne nutrients will be lost during storage. The book also briefly addresses behavior modification techniques such as developing a new approach to eating, altering eating habits, and starting an aerobic exercise program. Although the information presented in this book is accurate, 1 hesitate to recommend the long-term use of this diet. Much of the fat used in convenience foods is saturated. Furthermore, anyone following this diet will consume a wide variety of preservatives and additives on a daily basis. The menu is also expensive to follow; most convenience entrees co st two to three times more than the same me al prepared from scratch. This diet is geared for people who have a busy lifestyle and don't mind paying for the convenience of not having to cook. The most serious drawback is that this book spoon feeds dieters a meal plan rather than teaching them to read labels and bec orne discriminating shoppers. To encourage the use of Quaker instant oatmeal (260 mg sodium/serving, cost = 18(j;) instead of cooked rolled oats (1 mg sodium/serving, co st = 511:) takes the use of convenience foods to an extreme, costs the consumer more for packaging, and undermines the efforts of nutrition educators.
