Intracranial Pressure VII, by J . T . H o f f a n d A . L . B e t z (eds.), Springer-Verlag, Berlin, H e i d e l b e r g , N e w Y o r k , 1989, 980 pp., h a r d cover, D M 340.00 This hefty volume contains the proceedings of an international symposium on intracranial pressure, held in Ann Arbor, June 1988, and is the seventh of its kind, The 260 chapters covering almost 1000 pages have been categorised in session on monitoring, biophysics, CSF dynamics and hydrocephalus, ICP control, nosology (trauma, bleed, infection), free radicals, brain perfusion and metabolism, and, finally, brain edema. The sessions have not been synthetised in consensus-synopses on pathophysiological mechanisms. For the neurosurgeon and neurologist, and for laboratories specialised in neurotraumatology, this volume will be mandatory reading. The lay-out is, as can be expected from this publishing house, of traditional high standard. G.W. BRUYN

New Trends in Aging Research, by G , P e p e u , B. T o m l i n s o n a n d C . M . W i s c h i k (eds.), F i d i a R e s e a r c h Series, vol. 15, I v i a n a Press, P a d o v a , a n d Springer-Verlag, Berlin, H e i d e l b e r g , N e w Y o r k , T o k y o , 1988, 237 pp., h a r d cover, D M 98.00 This monograph contains the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Aging in Sirmione, April 1987. This reviewer received the book two and a half years later. The material presented is grouped into sections on neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, neuroimmunology, basic dementia research, and plasticity, most of the work being based on experiments in rats, some dealing with clinical data. Much of the data presented has been surpassed by research since then, some chapters, however, will serve as a good introduction. G.W. BRUYN

The Control of the Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenocortical Axis, by F. Clifford R o s e (ed.), 1989, I n t e r n a t i o n a l U n i v e r s i t i e s Press, M a d i s o n , C T , U . S . A . , 446 pages, U S $ 6 5 . 0 0 This book is a collection of papers by participants at a meeting in London in 1988. It presents original research as well as short reviews of selected topics by authorities in the field. The contents of the 30 articles range from the basics of CRF and vasopressin-eontrolled ACTH release to the effects of space flight. The emphasis is on basic physiology. The book presents a fascinating account of the complex array of interrelated control systems which are operative in the final output of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. Readers looking for standards in clinical diagnosis and therapy should not consult this book. Moreover, due to its nature, the book lacks a strong uniform line, the presentations differ somewhat in quality, and the survey of the field is by no means exhaustive. The pace of progress, however, merits this publication. H. P. H. KREMER
