Filter cartridge tester provides automated analysis Manufacturer of custom scientific instruments Porous Materials Inc (PMI) has developed the PMI Automated Filter Cartridge Tester, designed to provide fully automated through-pore analysis of entire filter cartridges of various geometries. The tester can measure bubble point, pore size distribution, mean pore size, gas, liquid and Frazier permeability, along with filter integrity. Its sample chamber design permits the use of cartridges having a diameter and length over a wide range, from several feet to several inches, the company says. The tester works when a fully wetted filter cartridge is placed in the sample chamber and the chamber is sealed. Gas is then

allowed to flow into the cartridge. When the pressure reaches a point that can overcome the capillary action of the fluid within the pore (largest pore), the bubble point has been found. After determination of the bubble point, the pressure is increased and the flow is measured until all pores are empty, and the filter is considered dry. PMI’s Automated Filter Cartridge Tester is suitable for quality control and R&D environments in any industry that utilises filter cartridges. Specific examples include automotive, pharmaceutical, filtration, pollution control, nonwovens, sintered metal and water purification. www.pmiapp.com

Efficient filtration for higher viscosity fluids Lubrication management specialist Trico has developed the Gear and Lube Oil Filtration System, which has been designed specifically for filtering higher viscosity fluids. It features a 4 GPM flow capacity and a maximum viscosity capability of 10,000 SUS at 100°F. This system can process high viscosity fluids with much greater efficiency than traditional hydraulic filter systems, Trico says. Hydraulic filter systems typically operate in a “bypass” mode, actually filtering very little of the fluid, because of higher pressures

involved with higher viscosities. The system also utilizes a multistage filtration process to ensure equipment receives the cleanest oil possible for increased life, and differential pressure gauges that indicate when each of the filtration elements need to be changed. Two sampling ports are included as well for safely sampling and monitoring the condition of the oil. The system is available in two models, a hand-held system and a portable cart system. www.tricocorp.com

New variable area flow meter AW-Lake Company, a North American manufacturer and distributor of flow meter products, has released ClearView, a variable area flow meter which has a clear body for applications where it is important to observe fluid condition. This new meter replaces the company’s phasedout VisiRate monitor. The ClearView meter is offered in two models: ClearView H2O for water applications and ClearView + – for oils and

chemicals such as solvents and coolants. The meter is available in a variety of sizes and porting options, including NPT and BSPP in brass or polysulphone. Measuring accuracy of the ClearView flow meter is ±5% of full scale, with repeatability of ±1% of full scale. According to the company, the meter has a compact, rugged design which helps avoid cracking. www.aw-lake.com
