NEWS FROM HEADQUARTERS Doris B. Pagano, R.N.
Executive Director Now that the 12th Annual AORN Congress has been so successfully concluded, it is gratifying to look back upon the enthusiasm and interest on the part of our membership. This was evidenced by the increase of approximately 2,000 members in attendance over previous Congresses. Other evidence of this enthusiasm in the Association of Operating Room Nurses was the enrollment of some 350 new members during the Congress, and the many requests for detailed information regarding the formation of new chapters. We have already filled these requests by forwarding a substantial number of copies of the “Manual for Local AORN Chapters.” We shall be happy to assist other members who wish to form a chapter in their area if they will please write us at National Headquarters for copies of the Manual. A very special note of thanks goes to the New York Congress Planning Committees, for their outstanding contribution to the overwhelming success of the Congress. This successful venture could not have been possible without the untiring efforts and deter-

mination of the committee members. We wish to convey our sincere thanks to the program participants who shared with us their knowledge so that we may continue to fulfill and improve standards of nursing care in the operating room. AORN is also grateful to the exhibiting companies and to all others who helped make this the memorable Congress that it was. Plans are now under way for the 13th Annual AORN Congress, to be held in Chicago next February at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. The AORN of Chicago has already done a great deal of work toward the next Congress and at this early date, all indications are that it will be an even bigger, busier and better Congress than ever.
BYLAWS As voted by the House of Delegates at the 12th Annual AORN Congress, revisions to the National Bylaws have been made and copies are now available from Headquarters. Each chapter president will receive a copy.

MEMBERSHIP Total membership in AORN has reached an all-time high. We have 81 chapters in 34 States and the District of Columbia. Newly welcomed chapters during the month of March were AORN of Pennsylvania, Area V; AORN of El Paso, Texas; and Chapter I of the AORN of Connecticut, thus making a total of 15 newly formed chapters for the 1964-65 fiscal year. Some chapters are still in the process of forming and we are confident that these will shortly receive recognition by the National Association. I would like to be able to say that I anticipate our membership reaching a new high in the coming year, but whether it does or not depends upon the concerted efforts of all members, not just the elected few, and not Headquarters alone. You will shortly receive your membership dues bill for 1965-66.I ask that you pay it promptly, so that your organization may have the funds it needs to maintain its work and to stimulate its growth. Every ORS should enlist every member of her staff as an AORN member; if you have as few as ten staff members you have sufficient to start your own Chapter. It will take the combined efforts of all of us if we are to reach every OR nurse in every hospital in the country. R E M I N D E R 4 h p t e r members: be sure to pay your dues through your chapter treasurer and not to National Headquarters; Individual members: please send your dues directly to National Headquarters.
MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY Those eligible for membership include any registered professional nurse actively engaged in operating room nursing, either full or part time, or one who is inactive in nursing but who was an operating room nurse immediately prior to becoming inactive. Associate membership may be obtained if a registered professional nurse possesses special

quarters be notified immedately when a change occurs in the officers of any local chapter. Correspondence between Headquarters and the chapters is the life’s blood of the Association. Unfortunately, too often the line of communication is broken and valuable mail goes astray. We cannot overemphasize the importance of prompt and complete reports on all elections or interim change of officers. NCE The National Committee on Education continues to work diligently. A pilot workshop and three Regional Institutes are scheduled for 1965, and three Regional Institutes for 1966. The Regional Institute to be presented by the AORN of East Texas will be held September 10-11, 196.5, in Tyler, Texas. Miss Jeanette Fleming is Genera1 Chairman. The NCE representative will be Patricia Grooms from Winter Park, Florida. The Institute to be presented by the AORN of Buffalo and Western New York is scheduled for October 22-23, 1965. General Chairman will be Sister Mary Eileen of Buffalo, with Doris M. Armstrong of Baltimore, Maryland, representing NCE.

OPERATING ROOM PROGRAMS Headquarters is constantly being bombarded with requests for available programs for the operating room technician, as well as post-graduate courses offered by hospitals. We are aware of several existing programs but our listing is by no means complete. We would appreciate being informed of programs which are available throughout the country so that we may provide this information upon request. AORN JOURNAL It has been a tremendous pleasure to receive your many letters telling us how much you enjoy AORN JOURNAL.We have been disturbed, however, to hear that some of you have failed to receive your copies. Above all, we must know if you contemplate a change of address. Without accurate up-to-date information we cannot help you.

with the members of AORN of Atlanta, a chapter formed only last July. In this short period their membership has doubled and I can say from personal experience that their enthusiasm is at the boiling point! Another stimulating experience to which I look forward is a planned visit with one of our most recently formed chapters, the AORN of Connecticut. This should be taking place in early May, about the time you will he receiving the Journal.
JOURNAL FILE BOXES Journal file boxes are no longer available through Headquarters. They can be obtained at any time directly from the manufacturer, Mr. Lewis Karp, Preem Sales, Inc., 21 East 40th Street, New York, New York, at $2 each.
As our 1965-66 fiscal year approaches, I want to assure the membership that I will do all in my power to promote the growth and development of our Association. But remember, this is your Association, “There Is No Substitute For You,” and it is only together that we can meet the ever-growing demands of our specialization.
