N e w s from A r g o n n e National Laboratory N e w s from VG M i c r o t e c h VG Microtech announced that from 1 January 1991 the STM (Scanning Tunnelling Microscope), which was previously manufactured by their sister company VG Microscopes, will be part of VG Microtech's product range. VG Microtech, whose comprehensive product range already comprises instruments for surface analysis, including electron spectrometers, SIMS quadrupoles, ion and electron guns, and electron diffraction equipment, is well placed to continue STM development and sales. Some members of VG Microscopes staff will transfer to VG Microtech to enable rapid product takeover and support for existing STM customers. The transfer of the STM to VG Microtech is seen as a strengthening of VG's position in the surface science field and will enhance the continued growth forecast by VG Microtech. N e w s from V e e c o I n s t r u m e n t s New marketing manager. Veeco Instruments has appointed Dave Cole to head up its sales and marketing operations in the UK, Scandinavia and Ireland. Formerly Product Manager Europe (EMD and PMCA) for the Englehard Corporation, Dave will be responsible for restructuring the Company's resources and implementing the business development plan for the 1990s. His particular experience in developing business strategies within the international market place will be influential in Veeco's continued penetration of both the leak detection and surface measurement equipment markets. The Watford-based Company now includes Scandinavia in its territories, and during 1990 it also became responsible for developing sales activities in Eastern Europe. "Veeco is now entering a new phase in its development," says Dave Cole, "and to this end I am instigating major changes which will considerably benefit our existing customers and widen our customer base. I anticipate 1991 as being a particularly exciting and innovative year, both with new products being added to our portfolio and expansions being made in terms of customer support services." During his 20 years with Engtehard, Dave Cole spent the early part of his career in technical sales, before moving on to business analysis and development and finally into international marketing.
The superconductivity Pilot Center at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory has signed a co-operative research agreement to help improve the performance of SuperconiX's hightemperature superconductors. High-temperature superconductors are recently discovered materials that lose all resistance to electrical current when cooled to 75-1 25 K (324 to 234 degrees below zero F). SuperconiX has discovered new materials and developed methods for growing high-temperature superconductors with long, well aligned grains that could be well suited for flexible wires, tapes and rods. SuperconiX's material becomes superconducting at 85 K (306 degrees below zero F). The joint project will attempt to make it superconducting at higher temperatures. Argonne will test various heat treatments on the material, measure any resulting effect on its performance, and suggest ways to improve the production process.
