E oils or other light fluids (below 32 SSU) at volumes up to 8000 gpm and pressures to 500 psi. For non-continuous flow conditions, GTS Series pumps offer a dry-run capability which allows them to be used for unloading and tank stripping. GTS Series pumps are widely employed, often under the most demanding pumping conditions, by the petroleum production, petrochemical, chemical processing and other process industries in high volume, medium pressure and high temperature applications. Direct liquid injection system MKS Instruments, UK Ltd has recently introduced its DLI-25B range of direct liquid injection components for the delivery of advanced silicon organic materials. Substances such as TEOS and other liquid precursors (metal organics) are used in the processing of advanced semiconductors, ferroelectrics, superconducting materials, and other applications. The DLI-25B system consists of a liquid pump, vaporiser, and electronic pump/vaporiser controller. It is capable of delivering between 0.006 and 10 cc of liquid (water equivalent) per minute, without exposing the precursors to heat or reactive carrier gas. The positive displacement, dual piston, stepper motordriven, metering pump delivers the liquid in a smooth, pulsefree manner, and the vaporiser, a temperature-controlled element adjustable from room temperature to 200 ‘C, quickly flash-evaporates the liquid for introduction into the system. Responsive to changes in flow set rate point, flow control is highly accurate and is unaffected by changes in delivery line restrictions.

Digital control option for bearing controller Glacier Magnetic Bearings, part of the T&N Bearings Group, has announced a new digital option for its magnetic bearings controller. The option has initially been used for bearings operating on pump shafts but can be utilised for almost any magnetic bearing application. The new digital control system provides a flexible alternative to traditional analogue bearing controls and supervsory programmable logic control (PLC) systems, both in terms of user interface and control law capabilities. With the digital option, the user interface is controlled by a VME mounted PC. This allows the user several levels of control through a series of paged menus, accessing machine control, diagnostics and commissioning. Material for seals and precision mouldings Besides its black perfluoroelastomer, Simriz, Freudenberg has now introduced Simwhite, a white base material for making seals and precision mouldings. Simwhite is just as mediaresistant as Simriz. Both materials are resistant to both strong inorganic and organic acids and bases, to chlorinated and highly
polar organic solvents and to aromatic substances like benzene and xylene. These properties mean they exhibit a similar media resistance to PIYE, but have rubberelastic properties as well and so are well suited to be used as seal materials. Both materials can be used at temperatures from -12 to +230 “C. Contact: The Freudenberg Group, D-69465, Germany. Tel: i-49 6201 800; Fax: +49 6201 803430.
Non-contacting gas barrier seal A non-contacting, double gasbarrier seal, designated the GF200 Dura Seal, is a zero-emission design that provides long service life and significantly reduced power consumption. These performance benefits result from an advanced pattern

gas seal (APGS) face geometry featuring full fluid-film seal face lubrication. The GF-200, available from Durametallic Corporation, is suited for service industries such as chemical processing, petroleum relining, petrochemical, and pulp and paper where toxic substances are handled; the seal is compatible with a wide range of rotating equipment applications including ANSI and API pumps with enlarged-bore seal chambers as well as industrial blowers and fans. Because of its non-contacting, full fluid-film lubrication design, the GF-200 seal is capable of operation at speeds up to 5000 fpm (25 mps), at temperatures from -40 “F to 500 “F (-40 “C to 260 “C) , and from full vacuum to pressures as high as 500 psig (3450 kPa) The seals are available in sizes from 1000 in to 6000 in (25 mm to 152 mm). Installation of the GF-200 is simplified by its preset, cartridge design. A canister, back-to-back seal arrangement, the GF-200 utilizes an inert gas, such as nitrogen or instrument air, as the barrier fluid, injection at a pressure differential of 20 to 50 psig (138 to 345 kPa) above the seal chamber pressure. Typically, a supply header is tapped to provide the barrier gas; all that is required is a pressure
iolid stainless steel cartridge Mechanical Seals gauge, flow meter, needle valve, and regulator. Also, the use of inert nitrogen, for example, as the barrier gas poses negligible potential for process fluid contamination. Field and bench tests indicate barrier gas leakage of less than 3.0 SCFH at normal pressure. Thus, barriergas costs for operating the GF200 are minimal as are maintenance requirements. Stainless cartridge
A new range of patented cartridge seals, which includes two unique features, was launched by Sterling Mechanical Seals at Eurochem, UK. The new Sterling cartridge seals have a patented selfaligning stationary mechanism which increases seal life. Any slight misalignment in a pump can be compensated by the selfaligning stationary feature. The second feature of the new cartridge seal is a carbon restriction bush which virtually acts as a secondary seal. It serves to centre the gland on the shaft, set the seal to the correct working length and restricts the leakage

when the seal eventually wears out. The bush is passive until leakage pressure hydraulically loads it to close the gap, restricting leakage to the environment. The gland housing is machined from stainless steel which eliminates porosity that can occur in castings and the grain flow is longitudinal which also increases the seal’s strength. A full variety of face combinations are currently available. The hydraulic balance of the seal face ensures reduced face loading from pressure surges giving cooler running and longer life. The sleeve O-ring is static on the shaft and guaranteed never to fret the pump shaft or sleeve. Sterling’s standard cartridge seal is fitted with Viton Orings and a full range of elastomers are available on request. The seal is easy to install and set and can be supplied with a flush, quench and drain if required. The seal, which is suitable for water treatment and sewage plants, petro-chemical and chemical process industries and power stations, has a pressure rating of 711 mm Hg vacuum to maximum 30 bar.
