NEWS A N D NOTICES SEAFOOD RESEARCH W O R K E R H O N O U R E D A RF.SEARCHERin seafood processing at the University of Maryland has been named Young Engineer of the Year for 1980 by his peers in the North Atlantic Region of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. He is Dr. Frederick W. Wtamton, professor of agricultural engineering and a faculty member at the College Park campus since 1968. Dr. Wheaton has been a pioneer in aquacultural engineering, the waterborne component of agricultural engineering, and his efforts have helped to make the University of Maryland nationally prominent in this relatively new field. Under his leadership, the university was the first academic institution in the nation to offer undergraduate courses and graduate programmes in aquacuitural engineering. His textbook on this subject is the first known college-level manual for teaching the application of engineering principles to the seafood industry. Dr. Wheaton's research work has included numerous projects supported by the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station and he has been responsible for nearly $500,000 in agricultural engineering research funding. Five patentable designs have developed from this research. They include: Shellfish hinge exposing and severing apparatus; Process for severing the hinge in shellfish; Apparatus to detach and separate shellfish meat and shell; Process for detaching shellfish meat from shell by selective heating and cooling; Shellfish muscle detaching mechanism. In addition, a manufacturer is currently planning to market his oyster washing machine. Dr. Wheaton is also a reviewer of grant proposals submitted to various agencies by other research workers around the nation. He is a former associate editor for Ocean Engineering and is currently an associate editor for Aquacultural Technology, a new professional journal published in England. He was instrumental in establishing the Aquacultural Engineering Committee as a part of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and he has presented technical papers before national meetings of several professional organizations.

NORWEGIAN SYMPOSIUM ON EXPLORATION (NSE-81), UNIVERSITY OF BERGEN, NORWAY 14-18 SEPTEMBER, 1981 TECHNICALpapers on exploration, review papers and case histories from proven oil or gas fields are welcome. Geological papers on special problems related to generation and migration of hydrocarbons and geophysical contributions related to resolution of the Mesozoic are especially wanted. IOl
