Report from Council

The President reported that Dr J. M. Dunlop was presented with the John Kershaw Award, Dr P. A. Gardner with the Public Health Award and Dr Heather Richardson received the Newth Award. The Editor said the three recipients were most worthy people to receive these awards and congratulations were extended to these three doctors. The Society has donated a badge of office to the BMA for the Chairman of the CPHMCH and also a cheque as their share in the James Preston Memorial Award. Dr Dunlop made the presentation and the badge was greatly admired on the day. The badge is suitably inscribed on the back. Conferences have been held on the following subjects: 'HIV/AIDS and Young People'; 'Management Awareness'; 'Interviewing Skills (Child Abuse)'; 'Young People with Disabilities--Can We Do More'; 'The Annual Postgraduate and Training Courses' and 'Managing Stress'. These have proved extremely successful with venues ranging from London to Edinburgh. Conference proceedings are available from the Hon. Secretary. (5)

been received by the 30 September 1991 they will be deleted from the Handbook. This recommendation was approved by the A G M . The Hon. Secretary reported that D r Lambton would not be seeking re-election as Treasurer of the Society and has tendered his resignation. The Society's grateful thanks to the retiring Treasurer were recorded. After an explanation from the Auditor about additional charges, the audited accounts for the year ending 30 September 1990 were formally approved. (6)

Faculty Report

The Chairman of the Faculty Board reported that the third Annual Conference of the Faculty has recently taken place and was a very successful event. There have been two Training Courses and these were well received. A Working Group was set up to consider membership and recommendations were submitted to the A G M and were approved as follows. Associate membership may be offered to any doctor or health care professional with an interest in Community Health. It will not be offered to doctors in Community Health Departments, as they will be expected to seek full membership through examination. A further condition is that they should be members of the Society but will not have the power to vote. The Associate membership fee should not exceed 30% of the full fee and has to be set by Council. Dr Roden attended a Conference in Finland in June, and part of the fee was paid for by Council for which she had expressed her gratitude. Two hundred and fifty people attended but Dr Roden was the only person from England who presented a paper. A Working Party is to be created which will set E u r o p e a n standards to go to the W H O . The next conference in 1992 is to be held in Leipzig from 30 June to 2 July. Congratulations were conveyed to D r Roden on the success of her paper and it was suggested that this might be published, possibly in booklet form. Dr Margaret Grant was elected Chairman of the Faculty Board for 1991/92, Dr A n n e Roden Vice Chairman and Dr Jenny Lane Registrar. T h e r e is no change in the other officers. D r Burne has also been co-opted as a member. (7)

Editor's Report

The Editor gave an overview of the year's work and reported that he continues to produce six issues of the Journal a year. There are two issues in hand and there is a constant flow of papers. The January issue of the Journal was a commemorative issue for the retirement of Professor Alwyn Smith. The Society held a dinner in his h o n o u r on 26 March 1991 in Manchester, at which he was presented with a leather-bound copy of that particular issue.

Installation of new President and vote of thanks

The retiring President, Dr J. M. Morfitt, said it had been a privilege to serve the Society and how much he had enjoyed his year of office. He briefly recalled the events of the year and then gave special thanks to Council who had put up with his 'indecisive' chairing of meetings; he paid particular thanks to Dr Gardner for all his support and his hard work. Dr Morfitt then installed Dr B. H. Burne as President for the coming year. Dr Burne is particularly well known for his work with the Ruth Griffiths Scales and would no doubt prove to be a worthy President. Dr Burne thanked the Past President for the way he had conducted the business of the Society during his year of office despite difficulties with his health. Dr Burne is to represent the Society on both community medicine and community health issues with which he still holds strong links.
