Notice from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery T h e American Board of Thoracic Surgery began its recertification process i n 1984. Diplomates interested i n participating i n this examination should maintain a documented list of t h e cardiothoracic operations they performed d u r i n g t h e year prior t o application for recertification. They should also k e e p a record of their attendance a t thoracic surgical meetings, a n d other continui n g medical education activities pertaining to thoracic surgery and thoracic disease, for t h e t w o years prior to application. A m i n i m u m of 100 h o u r s of approved CME activity is required. In place of a cognitive examination, candidates for recertification will be required t o complete both the general thoracic and cardiac portions of t h e SESATS I11 syllabus (Self-Education/Self-Assessment i n Thoracic Surgery). It is n o t necessary for candidates t o purchase
SESATS I11 booklets prior to applying for recertification. SESATS 111 booklets will b e forwarded t o candidates after their applications h a v e been accepted. Diplomates whose 10-year certificates will expire i n 1990 may begin t h e recertification process i n 1988. This new certificate will be d a t e d 10 years from t h e time of expiration of t h e original certificate. Recertification is also open to a n y Diplomate w i t h an unlimited certificate a n d will i n no w a y affect t h e validity of t h e original certificate. The deadline for submission of applications is July 1, 1988.
