In the particular case of a footing resting on the crest of a slope, it is shown that, beyond the classical stress and displacement fields, the model provides a good evaluation of the rupture mechanism and the bearing capacity. For monitoring the behaviour of the dam-foundation complex and reservoir banks, geotechnical and geodetic in situ observations and geophysical surveys were performed. In situ tests of the permeability of rock surrounding the Simly Dam, Pakistan, indicated that the rocks are open up to 23m depth and the flow is predominantly along the bedding planes (strike wise). This necessitated an elaborate permeability test and test grouting programme, wherein 473 water pressure tests were conducted in 53 boreholes. The permeability test results are fairly comparable to grout intake. Specially adapted equipment and a theory are described. A hypothesis is proposed which allows the prediction of Cv, the coefficient of consolidation, by taking into account K measurements and the compression index determined by an oedometer test. The dam site is in an area of cavernous limestone and treatment to prevent water loss through the right abutment involved the driving of six grouting galleries as the access to fill the concrete into the cavities and to execute the grouting work. Within the abutment close to the dam an area of ungroutable microfractured limestone was encountered.
