From the AANP President Nurse Practitioners Leading the Way
N
urse practitioners are on the front lines of healthcare providing the highest level of care for optimal outcomes of patients. NPs are on these front lines in primary care, acute care, hospitals, outpatient clinics and offices in rural and urban areas, with outcomes in preventive, acute and chronic care that have not gone un-noticed. Other organizations, societies and legislatures are seeing the value of NP care for patients and are seeing the benefit of NP practice. AANP is contacted almost daily with requests to partner in initiatives that benefit patient care. Some of these partners include the CDC and the White House (Initiative for Antibiotic Stewardship), HHS and Million Hearts, White House Joining Forces initiative, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations e Profession & Technical Advisory Committees. Others are not as well known but are just as significant. AANP engages in these efforts and initiatives to ensure that NPs and the care they provide are represented well, that language is provider-neutral in outreach communication, that legislative efforts move NP practice forward and that our patients are always first. Continue providing the highest level of care. Keep looking for ways to improve on your expertise. Find mentors to help you along your way but also remember to mentor those NPs in training or early in their careers to ensure the highest professionalism and excellence in care. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first NP program created at the University of Colorado in 1965, we can look with pride at all we have accomplished in this time period. Although many challenges are ahead for health care in general, NPs will continue to lead the charge for patient access to their provider of choice and for removal of barriers to this access in every state. Honor our past and energize our future. Our profession and patients will continue to benefit e and others will continue to notice.
