Health Service Research Fellowships

Nursing Home Booklet Updated

Health Service Research Fellowships for one year of advanced study and research will be awarded at three universities to practitioners experienced in the health care field and related areas. Three fellowships will be awarded at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago, and one at the City University of New York beginning September 1972. There will be a year of intensive classroom study and seminars, executive-level field projects and participation in research. All work will be individually designed to prepare the fellow for a position of greater leadership. The fellowships will be granted under contracts from HEW under sponsorship of its National Center for Health Services Research and Development. Candidates will be chosen from experienced leaders in mid-career-between the ages of 30 and 5(}-who have the background and maturity for growth under a unique educational program and who have the capability of moving upward to

A booklet published by APhA and the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and American Nursing Home Association, "Pharmaceutical Services in the Nursing Home" has been revised extensively and is now available. A single copy may be obtained free of charge from the three sponsoring organizations or Roche Laboratories, the financial sponsor of the booklet. First published in 1963, the 60-page publication outlines the fundamentals of pharmaceutical services in nursing homes. As pointed out in the preface, "pharmaceutical services involve more than providing a drug product to a patient; pharmaceutical services encompass the concept of drug use control which is the sum total of knowledge, understanding, judgements, procedures, skills, controls, and ethics that assures optimal safety in the distribution and use of medication." The booklet also emphasizes that the extent and degree of pharmaceutical services should be similar no matter if a pharmacy is located in the nursing home or if the pharmacy services are provided by a community pharmacist or hospital pharmacist.
