New Resources for Nutrition Educators BOOK AND DVD Nutrition EZ: Integrating Nutrition With Language Arts, Math, and Science Standards. Brown JA. 2008. JAB Publishing, 229 34th St, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, http://www.nutritionez.org. Paperback book and DVD, 200 pp, $34.95, ISBN 978-0-9817302-0-2. Educators can make their nutrition education lessons come alive with this book. It contains engaging K-5 worksheets that integrate nutrition education concepts into standards-based language arts, math, and science lessons. Because it contains many hands-on activities, students will eagerly learn and retain the basic concepts of good nutrition in accordance with the new USDA MyPyramid guidelines, while forming lifelong healthful eating habits. This book also contains an interesting and motivating 10-minute DVD containing hands-on nutrition integration ideas. The Food Guide Pyramid has never been easy or fun for teachers to teach and for students to learn. This book is a great tool to help educators teach the basics of nutrition to grade levels K-5 while following educational standards, which require skills in language arts, mathematics, science, and health. The author did an outstanding job of clearly defining food groups, discretionary calories, and the importance of label reading and physical activity. Nutrition EZ is used as an added resource for teachers to educate students in basic nutrition. It starts with MyPyramid and continues to build on knowledge of the 5 food groups
and the oils. The latter chapters also cover discretionary calories and physical activity. Each chapter consists of worksheets that can be used as part of hands-on activities and clearly lists suggested standards/grade levels. The worksheets are well presented and fun to use; the graphics are especially appealing to the intended age group (K-5). The main ideas of the book are presented clearly and flow smoothly. The illustrations contribute tremendously to the material and are on the same page as their textual references. All information needed on the worksheets is on the forms and requires no further explanation. Because of how the book is bound, a specific
improvement would be to include an electronic version of the worksheets so that making copies would be easier. It is also of note that the standards are limited to the state of California. The DVD provides a good overview of the book. Overall, the book is easy to use, well written and organized, and the lessons do not require an extensive amount of time to prepare. The Food Guide Pyramid is a challenge to teach since ‘‘one size does not fit all.’’ Nutrition EZ was able to break the pyramid down into segments that are straightforward. It is a great resource for busy classroom teachers, especially when each worksheet conveniently lists suggested standards for grade levels. This information will assist the teacher in meeting the school standards and at the same time enable teachers to increase nutrition awareness and help students form healthful habits for life.
