NZ INVESTMENT TO CAPTURE HIGHER VALUE MARKETS Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) is spending NZ$58 million upgrading its Whakatane paperboard business in order to move into higher value markets, including cosmetic and pharmaceutical packaging. CHH’s Whakatane paperboard mill is the only mill in New Zealand that produces folding carton board and some of the equipment at the mill is now over 30 years old. The upgrade will increase the mill’s current production by 23%, from 86 000 tonnes to 106 000 tonnes per annum. A key component of the Whakatane upgrade is the installation of a new ‘wet end’ to the paper machine. As a result, the print surface, strength properties and ability to produce lighter weight

boards will be significantly improved. The upgrade is scheduled for completion by mid next year. The first folding carton board products are expected to roll off the production line within the first month after the upgrade project is complete.

WATER & WASTEWATER VA TECH WABAG WINS FRENCH WASTEWATER WORK VA Tech Wabag France has been awarded a 7.25 million contract for the Chalons-en-Champagne wastewater treatment plant in Northern France which is due for start-up in 2005. The scope of VA Tech Wabag’s work covers design, supply, erection and start-up of the plant. Because the plant will treat a mixture of municipal wastewater, some industrial effluent process steps are being incorporated. The plant will apply pre-treatment with screening, sand and fat removal and an activated sludge process with simultaneous phosphorous precipitation.

AWS AWARDED ARIZONA WATER TREATMENT CONTRACT American Water Services (AWS) has signed a US$336 million contract with the City of Phoenix to design, build and operate the new Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant in Arizona. The plant will be the largest design-build-operate water project in North America and is Phoenix’s first venture into municipal water production through a public-private partnership. To meet current and future water demands the

plant will be built in phases. The first phase will have an 80 million gallon per day capacity, serving approximately 400 000 households. Additional capacity can be added in the future to allow for growth in the region and could ultimately reach 320 million gallons per day. As the prime contractor, AWS will provide project management services and be responsible for operating services. AWS, a division of RWE, has retained Black & Veatch Construction Inc and McCarthy Building to design and build the water treatment plant. Groundbreaking is planned for July 2004, with first-phase operations set for February 2007.

IRELAND OUTLINES 5.4BN WATER SERVICES INVESTMENT Under a 5.4 billion water and sewerage infrastructure investment programme every population centre of over 1000 people in Ireland will soon have its own wastewater treatment plant. The Water Services Investment Programme 20032005, funded by the National Development Plan, will cover 737 water and sewerage schemes across the 26 counties between now and the end of 2005.
