OEM Pump solution recovers diesel spill An environmental engineering company based in Southeast England was recently faced with the task of recovering spilt diesel fuel from its leaking storage tanks. The fuel had spread over a wide area and needed to be quickly and effectively removed from the site. An OEM peristaltic pump solution has been designed for the demanding duty and is even now cleaning up the site. Autoclude, a specialist OEM pump company, based in nearby Essex in Southeast England, was called in to assist the engineering company in the clean-up operation. Autoclude supplied three IP 55 enclosures each containing two M3000 peristaltic pumps for the remediation program. The solution provides a nominal flow rate of 400 ml/min at a pressure of 2 bar and, more importantly, offers a high suction lift capacity of 8.5 m, which is essential in retrieving the spilt diesel from the ground and transferring it safely into storage containers. The enclosures use a DC permanent magnet motor, which runs off a power supply of 230V 50Hz and offers a motor speed of 55 rpm. The tubing is made from Viton, a chemically resistant polyurethane type material that can cope with the diesel fuel duty and still provide a good service life. The M3000 pump head is made from a polyester coated aluminium alloy material and the pump rotor from an anodised aluminium alloy. Six boreholes have been sunk into the ground around the contaminated area to drain the mixture of polluted water and diesel fuel from the ground. Each borehole contains a specially designed float that houses the end of a suction tube, which connects back to the six M3000 pumps. The tube

and float system allows any oil situated on the top of the groundwater to be pumped straight into a holding tank ready for disposal. In addition, the float solution is linked to a drip tray mounted beneath the pumps and a level switch in the holding tank, enabling operation to be automatically shutdown if one of the tubes fails or a leak develops. This prevents any contaminated liquid leaking back into the ground. The peristaltic pump system works on asymmetric timers, which allow for intermittent operation – for example, 10 minutes on and 30 minutes off. The operational working time can be adjusted to suit end user requirements. An integral battery allows programmes to be retained in the event of a leak or automatic shutdown. The remediation process at the environmental engineering company is continuing apace and it is hoped that the site will be effectively cleansed before the end of the year. Autoclude’s diesel spill remediation system, installed at an environmental engineering company in Southeast England, features three IP55 enclosures, each of which contains two M3000 peristaltic pumps.

Pump installed on water level control duty Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI of England, Eton College has been home to many great figures in English history, most recently Diana Princess of Wales’ two sons and the heirs to the British throne, HRH Prince William and HRH Prince Harry. The privately funded school is now also home to a great pump, recently installed on a water regulation duty. Grundfos supplied the elite school with its SP77-5 submersible borehole pump, which has since been installed on the rowing lake at the college.
