M uch has been w ritten about designing a dental office. A nother textbook is now available that approaches the task of of fice space design using Jain M alkin’s 12 years of experience in the exclusive design of health care facilities. Combining her formal academ ic training in psychol ogy and environm ental design, and inte grating that experience w ith a design phi losophy developed after years of research conducted in the hospital industry, the author has w ritten this reference textbook for the health professions. The 14-chapter book is attractively designed, and contains more than 70 floor plans of various m edical and dental specialties, and more than 200 photographs of various m edical and dental equipm ent and room in te rio rs. In c lu d e d are an abundance of color photographs of room interiors designed in th e p ast several years by the author. This book is intended to serve as a gen eral reference book for architects, interior designers, and the health care profes sionals. It is well organized w ith chapters focusing on topics such as: psychology, im plications for health care design, general param eters of m edical space plan-

The design of m edical and den tal facilities
ning, color and its im pact on the medical environm ent, interior finishes, construc tion m ethods and researching codes, and reference m aterials. More than 20 types of m edical and dental practices are d is cussed specifically citing needs for altera tions in space design, equipm ent place m ent and use, business office require m ents, and interior design features. The author provides a space analysis formula w ith exam ples for each type of m edical and dental specialty discussed in the text. The fact that this book was intended to serve as a reference book for various groups leads to its inherent weakness, es pecially from the den tist’s perspective. Only one chapter relates specifically to the design characteristics of general den tal practice. Specific space requirem ents, design, and interior finishings for three specialties—orthodontics, pediatric den t i s t r y , a n d o ra l a n d m a x illo f a c ia l surgery—are specifically addressed in this chapter. Several im portant topics are either m issing or treated superficially. For example, there is no real discussion of delivery system selection and criteria or
the im portance of practice philosophy on space design and equipm ent selection, nor any real discussion of m ultiple pro viders, use of auxiliaries, and their im pact on traffic flow. Only a lim ited presenta tion of sterilization procedures and the design requirem ents for business offices were made. The au th o r’s perspective in designing health care facilities more from the pa tie n t’s perspective than has been trad i tio n ally used is laudatory. T his book w ould m ake a good addition to the library of the architect or interior designer who may assist the dentist w ith office design; how ever other publications are available that w ould be of greater value to the prac ticing dentist. A lthough th is doctoral thesis was recog nized as a sig n ifican t co n trib u tio n to m edicine w hen first published in 1828 and translated into French in 1836, this is the first English translation. Froriep d i vided his work into the anatom ic study of the developm ent of the tongue; diagnosis using the norm al tongue; the tongue in various diseases, and at various stages of the diseases; and the literature. The Latin text is prin ted on the left-hand pages with the English translation on the right. Cor rections to th e Latin text are m ade w hen obvious copying errors appear or w hen som e accid en t im pairs u n derstanding. Translation of m edical term s uses the En glish term in use at the tim e of w riting and does not provide cu rren t m edical ter m inology. This, the eighth volum e in the series De velopm ents in Oncology, reports on a 25-year follow -up study of 520 patients from an original group of 772 patients with oral leukoplakia in Budapest. From the results of the study it w as possible to establish the rate of m alignant transfor m ation and the significance of the site of the lesion. Inform ation was also obtained concernin g th e transform ation of one clinical type to another, the frequency of regressive and progressive changes, the relation of m alignant transform ation to the type of keratinization, and the ultrastructural characteristics as related to clinical type and histologic structure of
leukoplakia. There are m any clinical and u ltrastructural illustrations, and m any data are presented in tables for easy use. A 23-page list of references for further study is included as part of the text.
Each chapter ends w ith the list of review questions and further readings. A list of the cited references is presented as is a nine-page glossary of terms used in the text.

The pictures in this collection have been chosen to assist the general practitioner in diagnosis of oral conditions and treat m ent planning. Generally, diseases with sim ilar causes have been grouped to g e th e r, or in som e cases, have been grouped by anatom ic site. Contributions from im m unology, m icrobiology, elec tron microscopy, and m olecular biology that w ere not available at the tim e of preparation of the third edition have been added, and most of the text has been re w ritten to co incide w ith current con cepts. A num ber of new diseases and le sions have been added, as have some il lustrations. A lthough the list of sources for additional reading is shortened, it has been updated. *Stress, health and psychological prob lems in the major professions E. Lakin Phillips 478 p a g e s w ith illustrations. W ashington, DC, U niversity P ress o f A m erica, 1982
A lthough the professions in the United States are rapidly changing, little is done to u n d e r s t a n d th e c h a n g e s a n d to m inim ize effects on the professional and his or her health. The problems are on several levels; the selection of persons en tering a profession, the indoctrination process, orientation of the professional tow ard his or her own advancem ent and econom ic gain, material gains and quests resulting from m aterialistic orientation, and stresses caused by “the professional w ho tries (and often does) play God.” This text is a review of the state of the pro fessions and each chapter includes long bibliographies. U nfortunately, it is dif ficult to locate inform ation because there is no index and page num bers do not ap pear in the table of contents. Traditional professions are included and there is a separate chapter on wom en in the profes sions. *Neurophysiology: the fundamentals Robert A. Extensive revision has been done on m any of the chapters of this text about the application of statistics to dental data and the design of experiments; two new chap ters have been added and one om itted from the first edition. The basic premise» of the book is that the lack of formal train ing is not a deterrent to understanding statistical principles or a reason for ignor ing such principles. The appendix relates com puter printouts from HP 41C pro grams and the popular, com prehensive SAS, SPSS, and BMDP software pack ages. *Human neuroanatomy M alcolm B. Carpenter, MD, an d Jerom e Sutin, PhD 872 p a g es with illustrations. Index. Easton, Md, W illiam s & W ilkins Co, 1982
K now ledge of neu ro an ato m y has in creased in the last few years because of advances in fundam ental concepts, new research techniques, and recognition of the im portance of the nervous system to all aspects of medicine. The text of this classic has been expanded and revised, and new illustrations have been added. A ppended to the text are a bibliography and an atlas of the brain and brain stem. ‘ Review of dental assisting H azel O. Torres, CDA, RDA, MA; and Lois E. M azzucchi, CDA, RDA, MA 432 p a g es with illustrations. P hiladelphia, W. B. Saunders, 1982
M aterial presented in this review should be of interest to dental assisting students, dental hygiene students, beginning den tal students, and dental office employees w ho may not have had formal training be fore employm ent. The 19 chapters cover the basic sciences; office procedures, such as history taking; and all of the gen eral and sp ecialty areas of d en tistry . Chapters start with a list of goals, con tinue with a series of review questions (m ultiple choice, m atching, com pletion, and case study) and end w ith answ ers to the questions. The aim of the book is not only to enable the reader to pass a test, but also to im part knowledge about the why and how of dental procedures. A threepage list of references is provided at the end of the book for the person w anting more information in a particular area.
