Secretary, also supported t h e opinion t h a t four beds per thousand population, even exclusive of isolation hospitals and such like, was not adequate, but whatever ~ system was adopted in the way of creation of-extra hospital accommodation an attempt should be made to interest the general practitioners, and he held that the classification of cases according to the nature of the sickness was essential in the establishment of any scheme. Dr. Buch:an replied to the criticisms and said that all cases would be certified on admission to these hospitals and institutions by, say, the District Medical Officer, and he referred the cases under Section 24 of the Lunacy Act of I89O, which comes under the jurisdiction of the guardians. He also said that the attached staff referred to would b e adequately remunerated. The Hon. Secretary (Dr: Kaye), introduced the Order of December, 19I 7 , with regard to Water Supply to Factories and Workshops. C. Banks, Deputy Officer of Health f o r Birkenhead, has been appointe d Medical Officer of Health for the Borough of Stafford at a salary of £600 per annum. B y arrangement with the C o u n t y Council he will have charge of the medical inspection of schools in the town, and will also act as Medical Officer to the Maternity and Child Welfare Centre and School Clinic. For these services the Coffnty Council will pay a total of £255 towards his salary.
