International Aquaculture Symposium The International Aquaculture Symposium is to take place in Istanbul, Turkey on 23-25 November, 1987. The symposium, co-sponsored by the European Aquaculture Society, hopes to provide an international forum for the exchange of information and expertise among all involved or interested in aquaculture. Turkey has great potential for both fresh and marine aquaculture but needs new developments, based on the expertise acquired in other Mediterranean countries but tailored to the Turkish situation. Through this symposium the Organizing Committee hopes to stimulate international cooperation in the development of Turkish aquaculture. Papers are invited on the present status of culture, new technological developments, potential for future projects, processing, marketing, trading, and investing, concerning • freshwater and marine finfish • crustaceans (especially freshwater crayfish) • molluscs • diseases • potential aquaculture species. For luther details contact the conference secretariat: Dr I. Oray, Istanbul Universitesi, Su Urunleri Yuksekokulu, Beykoz-Istanbul, Turkey.
contamination of the marine environment. A number of candidate time series data was collected in 1986 and 1987 and this material was reviewed at the first meeting of the working group which was held at the Institute of Marine Environmental Research, Plymouth, UK, in July 1987. At the meeting, the need for more comprehensive information was recognized so as to include a wider range of environments (for example, polar, temperate and polar seas), ecosystem components (for example, plankton, benthos, fish), and forcing variables (for example climate, oceanographic conditions, 'natural' contaminants, xenobiotic substances). In order to document subtle changes in the marine environment over the long term, the working group wish to identify pertinent time-series data where programmes have beer~ sustained over periods of decades, or where consistent recent, historical and intermediate records are available. Data from areas considered to be 'pristine' and without contaminants, as well as those considered contaminated are to be considered. The working group would like to be advised of any relevant time series data or studies, and identification of reports or publications available for review. A second meeting of the group is scheduled for September 1988 and material for consideration should be available for distribution to members by January 1988. Further enquiries may be made to: Dr. Gwyneth Howells, Department of Applied Biology, Pembroke Street, Cambridge CB2 3DX, UK. Dr. Howells will be glad to correspond on the scope of the working group's assessment, and to receive any suitable material.

The Department of the Interior has finalized a new 5-Year Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Program for July 1987-July 1992. The programme establishes a timetable for the environmental studies, consultations, and decisions for the next 5 years regarding the tracts that are to be leased and the conditions under which leases will be offered. The plan outlines 24 standard sales, 11 frontier exploration sales, and 3 supplemental sales, for a total of 38 sales in 21 of the 26 OCS planning areas. The 24 standard lease sales include annual sales in the Central and Western Gulf of Mexico and triennial sales in 9 other planning areas. The frontier exploration sales will be offered triennially or less often. Frontier sales will be held only if industry interest is sufficient to warrant proceeding with the sale. If interest is not deemed sufficient for the sale, the sale can be delayed and requests for interest reissued, at a minimum, on an annual basis until sufficient interest warrants the sale. Beginning in late 1989, supplemental sales will be held annually on development blocks and on selected blocks for which bids were rejected or forfeited during the prior fiscal year. This 5-year plan differs from previous plans by deferring portions, or subareas, of 13 planning areas. These deferral areas cover some 85 million ha (213 471
