AN INTERNATIONAL NEWSLETTER MONITORING TECHNICAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS FOR ALL SURFACE ACTIVE AGENTS ISSN 1351–4210

The items featured in ‘Focus on Surfactants’ often deal with specific news stories about the sector, such as the launch of new products and the opening of new facilities. Although this first issue of 2015 is no different, it also features some items that take a broader or long-term view. Topics that have caught the eye are both specific and long-term developments in oleochemicals, innovations and trends. In oleochemicals, supply chain certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) will help Clariant meet the rising demand for sustainable certified palm-based ingredients from the personal care and home care industries (p 1-2). Similarly, Emery Oleochemicals has recently commercialized the production of RSPO segregated fatty alcohol solutions (p 2). A longer-term view of the sector is provided by the report by Grand View Research, which predicts that the global oleochemicals market will reach $30.03 bn by 2020 (p 6). Frost & Sullivan has analysed the Southeast Asian oleochemicals market, with a focus on fatty alcohols, glycerine and fatty acids (p 6). Hot on the heels of the introduction of GlucoPure for the home care sector (see ‘Focus on Surfactants, Dec 2014, 1,3), Clariant launched a range of sugar-based surfactants for use in the global personal care industry. The GlucoTain range will help minimize traditional formulation trade-offs by combining new sensorial experiences for consumers with new opportunities for formulation innovation and sustainability (p 2-3). The autumn

conference season also saw the launch of several other products for the personal care sector, with BASF (p 4) and Momentive (p 4) also introducing innovations at incosmetics Asia. Elsewhere, a review of innovation in the European personal care sector highlights the impact that legislative developments can have (p 3). In particular, the need to comply with REACH regulations is said to have spurred ingredients producers and formulators to look for affordable ways to innovate. A discussion of current trends in hair care formulation highlights how consumer and environmental safety concerns have led to the launch of products that provide alternatives to volatile cyclic siloxanes (p 4-5). In the cleaning sector, future trends in the development of cleaners and detergents will be driven by the properties of the main ingredients (p 5). Finally, on the trends theme, projected demand for coatings additives is the subject of two items in this issue (p 5-6). This issue edited by Dr Alan Skull
