New equlpmen analysis and produce professional looking reports. Functions such as profiles, histograms, spots, lines, areas and isotherms are available at the touch of a button, either by pulling down menus or clicking on the appropriate icon. Object parameters such as emissivity and ambient temperature can be changed simply by calling up a dialogue box. A range of different colour palettes including Ironbow or 16 colours can be used to display the image, in degrees Kelvin, Fahrenheit or Celsius. A significant advantage of the software is its ability to produce a range of different reports depending on the customer's individual requirements. While a typical report will include both visual and thermal images of the object, histograms, profiles and statistics, the customer may configure his own report templates to include, for example, standard text and/or different combinations of results windows.

On-site inspection of rotating machinery A hand held FFT analyser has been designed for on-site inspection of rotating machinery like engines, transmission gearing and production line equipment. The CF-1200 from Ono Sokki is a compact, notepad style instrument with side-mounted control switches so that it can be held and operated with one hand. Weighing 710 g, the singlechannel device has a 70 dB dynamic range and 20 kHz bandwidth that makes it suitable for teaching applications and a wide range

improving the rate of testing and providing objective measurement tools. A promising application is in the field of weld inspection. Here, the number of radiographs is generally very large, and the need for an automatic inspection procedure is often critical.
The analyser retains four instrument set-ups for rapid continuation of measurement sequences and can store up to 200 data screens using an optional plug-in memory card. Data stored on the memory card can be downloaded to PCs.
Isorad has developed various algorithms for the automatic inspection of weld radiographs. The idea is to detect and identify automatically welding defects such as incomplete penetration, cracks, porosity and voids.
Cards are also available to enable the instrument to be reconfigured easily for specific inspection applications and for firmware upgrades.

A two-step analysis method is adopted: a rapid search for defective regions, with a coarse resolution, followed by a fine identification and location.
Automatic recognition of welding defects in film radiography
The company's most advanced inspection procedure is based on artificial neural networks. A neural network, using three layers of neurons, has been built, in order to make a fast search of suspected defects in the radiograph. The network is trained by a training algorithm, specially developed to handle large training sets and to obtain optimal results for the inter-neuron connections.
The development of pattern recognition methods for automatic inspection of radiographic films will significantly improve quality assurance processes by reducing human involvement,
