the hills, it had not withdrawn from the valleys, except along the inner edge of the Chalk bills, and also that, in its retreat, the wedge-shaped masses of unwater-worn chalk-gravel, in some places having a terrace-like appearance, were quietly left on the scarps of the valleys in the positions in which we now observe them.
