diminish complications. In experienced hands and with the proper precautions, SLNBs have an acceptably low incidence of complications. Acknowledgments We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Tom Pilgram for his expert assistance in the analysis and presentation of our data. References [1] Narozny M, Zanetti M, Boos N. One Hundred Fifty-Five Years Ago in Spine In 1850, Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz [1] announced his method of measuring the velocity of a nerve impulse. By using a pendulummyograph of his own invention and a galvanometer,

he measured the time from nerve stimulation to muscle contraction. Trained as a surgeon in the Prussian Army, during most of his career von Helmholtz devoted his efforts to experimental physiology. He was successively professor of physiology and pathology at Ko¨nigsberg, anatomy and physiology at Bonn, physiology at Heidelberg and physics at Berlin.
