One Vote by Marcia Katz, RN his issue of the AeroMedical Journal signifies the rapidly approaching conclusion of another A S H B E A M S / N F N A / N F P A year. It s e e m s like only a few m o n t h s ago that we were preparing the conference issue of the journal for distribution in Washington, D.C. While a full y e a r has not y e t elapsed, we are swiftly approaching that period. As I reflect on the m o v e m e n t of the organizations in the past few months, and ponder w h a t is in front of us in the future, I am reminded that each year end is accompanied by the election of officers for the following 12 months. Yes, it is t i m e to consider w h a t duties WE all have as m e m b e r s of national organizations. Certainly, one of the m o s t important duties and obligations is participating in the selection of our leaders. Voting is not m e r e l y a duty or right of a member. Rather, it is a responsibility one a s s u m e s w h e n agreeing to join an organization's membership. One cannot become complacent and let the "other guy" decide or even consider that one's vote is not important. W h e n m a k i n g the important decision to vote for a candidate, the m e m b e r m u s t w e i g h all of the factors. A leader should be one with a proven track record of work, interest, and dedication to the principles of aviation medicine; one who will, in the future, devote hundreds of hours to the hard w o r k that is required of an officer. The candidate's qualifications should be carefully considered, his organizational philosophy needs to be understood, and his professional values m u s t be aligned w i t h those of the m e m b e r s before selection. The decision should not be m a d e lightly, since w e are all responsible for the u l t i m a t e outcome of an election. Remember, as a m e m b e r of A S H B E A M S / N F N A / N F P A , you have an obligation to give your best educated vote. You are i m p o r t a n t and your vote will be heard. @
