166 differences between the two groups, though the number of cases enrolled was relatively few. Nevertheless, our findings suggested a tendency for a clear pattern of invasion in the peripheral region to be more strongly enhanced than a diffuse pattern.

ASSESSMENT OF REGENERATION OF BONE DEFECTS IN PATIENTS EXPOSED TO ALTERNATING MAGNETIC FIELD
G. Dawiec, R. Koszowski, B. Pogorzelska-Stronczak, A. Sieron, J. Waskowska, J. Smieszek-Wilczewska. Department of Oral Surgery, Silesian Medical Academy, Dental Clinic of Silesian Medical Academy, Chair and Clinic of Internal Diseases, Angiology and Physical Medicine Silesian Medical Academy, Poland Bone defects which apear after surgical procedures in alveolar processes remain still serious problem in oral surgery. They complicate or even sometimes make imposissible implantological treatment. To avoid this unbeneficial consequences several augmentation procedures are performed. In last years interesting information about beneficial influence of alternating magnetic field upon bone metabolism were published. This phenomenon was used in treatment of delate union of fractured bone, moveable joints and osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to asses of influence of alternating magnetic field upon bone regeneration in postoperating bone defects. Invastigation were performed in Oral Surgery Department Silesian Medical Academy in Bytom in patients after surgical procedures leading to bone defects ( impacted teeth extraction, cystectomies, sequestrectomies). 11 patients after surgical procedures were exposed to alternating magnetic field for 15 days. VIOFOR JPS was used. Control group consisted of 11 patients after oral surgery procedures without any supporting bone healing. To asses the effects of bone regeneration digital radiodesnitometric measurements were performed in all patients after 3 and 6 months to operations with the use of Digora 2.1 programm. Optimal density of examined regions was presented graphically as histograms and field density profile. Digital radiodensitometry revealed improvement in optical density of bone defects in patients exposed to alternating magnetic field. Expositions to alternating magnetic field accelerated regeneration in bone defects.

Reserch Center, School of Dentistry at Nilgata, The Nippon Dental University, Japan The aim of this study was to establish oral carriage of Candida and possible factors associated to their relation with local and general situations considered as predisposing factors. Samples were obtained from oral cavity in 108 students attending the School of Dentistry at Niigata, The Nippon Dental University. Average age is 23.5 years old and all in healthy oral conditions. Of these, 31.3% were Candida positive. Yeasts were isolated using CHROMagar Candida, and were identified using a combination of the API 32 C AUX yeast identification system. The following species were identified: 33 Candida albicans, 1 Candida glabrata. In one case, previous 2 species were isolated in the same sample. Different host factors were analyzed statistically to establish their importance as predisposing factors to allow Candida colonization. Prevelence of Candida was detected 33 of 108 (30.6%) cases of healthy subjects and Candida albicans were isolated from all cases. In terms of salivary secretion, more Candida were detected when the amount of secretion of resting mixed saliva was decreased. Saliva may play one of the roles of oral candidasis. ~ A N
INFECTED CAROTID ARTERY PSEUDOANEURYSM AFTER THE EXTRACTION OF IMPACTED THIRD MOLER TOOTH : A CASE REPORT
S. Uehara, H. Kurita, H. Kobayashi, A. Nakatsuka, K. Kurashina. Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Shinshu University School of Medicine, Japan Pseudoaneurysm is caused by septicemia, drug addiction, postoperative infection, endcarditis and dental infection. It rarely develops in carotid artery. In this paper, we describe a rare case of an external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm after the extraction of impacted third moler
tooth. A 49-year-old Japanese man was referred for the treatment of pericoronitis around left impacted third moler tooth of the mandibule and a swelling of his left cervical lymph node which he noted one month before. He had a history of phlebothrombosis of femoral region and was received anticoagulant therapy. After antibiotic chemotherapy, His impacted third moler tooth of the mandibule was extracted. Twelve days after the operation, swelling in his left neck was seen and he visited us again. A pulsating swelling was palpated. He showed fever up of 37.6 degrees centigrade. The white blood cell count was 14880 and C-reactive protain was 10.77 mg/dl. CT scan of the neck revealed an aneurysm in his left external carotid artery. He was referred to neurosurgeons. A carotid angiography confirmed a pseudoaneurysm in the left external carotid artery. After the inflammation was improved with 8-week antibiotic therapy, he received an operation of external carotid artery bypass. Postoperative course was uneventful, we experienced a rare case of an external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm after the extraction of impacted third moler tooth.

EFFECTS OF AZITHROMYCIN ON MIGRATION OF NEUTROPHIL
]i Miyasaka, K. Kitahara, T. Satoh, ]i Matsuno. Dept. of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surg., Nippon Dental University, Japan Neutrophils play an important role in the host defense mechanism against bacterial infection. It is important to know what effects antimicrobial drugs, which are used in treatment, have on the function of neutrophils. We investigated the effect of azithromycin (AZM), an antimicrobial drug of the 15-membered ring macrolide series. We inoculated New Zealand white-strain male rabbits with Streptococcus milleri and Bacteroides fragilis according to the Satoh-Heimdahl method and produced a jawbone infection model. Neutrophils were separated from each of the blood samples collected by cardiac puncture before inoculation, and 3 days, 7 days, 3 weeks and 12 weeks after inoculation and prepared to a certain level in a suspension. To each neutrophil suspension, an AZM solution of various concentrations (1-10 #gram/mL) was added, and the effect of the drug on migration of neutrophils was investigated. Ampicillin and erythromycin served as reference drugs. Migration of neutrophil was enhanced after inoculation compared with before inoculation. There was no difference in the effect of AZM on neutrophils according to its concentration. We think that antimicrobial drugs should be selected from the standpoint of not only the features of antimicrobial drugs but the host defense mechanism.
[-P-~-'~ OPERATION WOUND HEALING PROCESS AFTER USING THE PLATELET RICH PLASMA A. Cieslik-Bielecka 1 , T. Bielecki 2, T.S. Gazdzik 2, T. Cieslik 1.
11 Department and Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery, Silesian Medical University, Zabrze, Poland; 2Department and Clinic of Orthopaedics, Silesian Medical University, Sosnowiec, Poland The aim of these experiments is estimation of operation wounds healing after using platelet rich plasma. Between November 2003 and November 2004 in Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery 18 patients in age 1 5 4 1 (the average 56 years old) were treated; 12 with using platelet gel method and 6 without it. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a blood plates concentrate, which we can obtain by spining in centrifuge and isolation full autogenous blood (GPS system, Biomet-Merck). After adding calcium and thrombin origins galatinous mass - platelet gel is formed. In all 18 cases indication to perform operation was cyst presence in mandible. Every day after operation pictures of wounds were performed. Patients were hospitalized since 3 ~ days after operation (average time of hospitalization was 4.6 days). After operation patients felt good, wounds healed without complications. In patients wounds after using PRP healed in 6 - 7 days, and in control group in 8-15. In one case from control group wound was infected. 1. Using PRP decreases bleeding from wound. 2. Platelet rich plasma accelerates wound healing process. 3. Operative wounds after using platelet gel heal without complications. Acknowledgements: This work is supported by Committee for Scientific Research (KBN) No. 2P05C00126.
