Biotechnol., 1995, 64, (2), 210-212. The swelling of a low-rank coal (Loy Yang, Latrobe Valley, Australia) in the presence of various solvents was examined and the results were compared with swelling data from a briquetted coal of similar rank. The results were interpreted in terms of the effects of briquetting on pore structure. 96/02397 Precombustion control options for air toxlcs Akers, D. J. and Harrison, C. D. Prepr. Pap-Am. Chern. Soc., Div. Fuel Chem... 1995, 40, (4), 823-827. Coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing ash-forming mineral matter along with many mineral-associated trace elements from coal. Data from commercial-scale cleaning tests indicate that trace elements reduction tends to increase as ash reduction increases. However, factors such as the mode of Occurrence of the trace-element-bearing mineral and the type of cleaning equipment also affect trace element reduction. There is evidence that advanced coal cleaning processes can provide higher reductions of some trace elements than conventional process. 96/02398 Preparation of SW desulfurlzer with pyrite cinder Yang, Y. and Wei, T. Organometallic iron precursors, ferrocene and ferric acetate, were impregnated into Illinois No.6 (IL), Wyoming (WY), and Yallourn (YL) coals by solvent swelling technique in THF, ethanol, and a THF/ethanol binary solvent. Then iron-impregnated coals were pyrolyzed in a flow of helium at atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed and a thermobalance. Conversion of coal nitrogen to N2 was 20, 38, and 30%, respectively for original IL, WY, and YL coals. 96/02402 Separation of unburned coal from coal ash Michihashi, H. (Assigned 10) Chichibu Onoda KK, lAP. Pal. lP.07,222,939, Aug. 1995.

96/02403 Separators in grinding circuits Onuma, E. and Ito, M. Verfahrenstech. Zementhersteli., 4th VDl-Kongr., (1993) Bauverlag, Wiesbaden, Germa/lY, 1995, 660-672. Conventional separators in grinding plants for raw meal, coal and cement have often shown rather poor separation performances. The recently developed high-efficiency separators are especially noted for their markedly improved separation performance and sharpness of separation. The mode of operation of a separator may be characterized advantageously by the shape of the Tromp separation curve, which shows the selectivity as a function of the particle grain size. Modern separators are used in grinding plants with ball mills, roller mills and high-pressure grinding rolls. 96/02404 Some characteristics of pelletlzation of coal slurries with Iignosulfonate Zalevskaya, G. N. et al., Khim. Tverd. Topl. (Moscow), 1995, (4), 57-61. (In Russian) Na lignosulphonate is used as a binder for coal pelletization from sludges. The pellets thus obtained are hydroscopic, and two methods are given for their hydrophobization with residual fuel oil. 96/02405 A study of particle separation in a spiral concentrator Atasoy, Y. and Spottiswood, D. R. Min. E/lg. (Littleton, Colo.), 1995, 47, (10), 933-942. 96/02411 Thermodynamics of coal-derived fluids. 3. VLE and heat capacities of coal liquid fractions Kabadi, V. N. Fuel, Feb. 1996, 75, (3), 363-372. A previously developed thermodynamic model for vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) properties of coal-derived liquids has been successfully revised and extended to compute calorimetric properties of these liquids. The revised model, which is based on the modified UNIFAC correlation, predicts accurately the phase coexistence and calorimetric properties of low-temperature fractions (b.p. <600K). However, like the previous model, the revised model fails at higher temperatures, in part because of the limitation of the UNIFAC activity coefficient correlation which uses binary interaction parameters regressed from low-temperature VLE and enthalpy data. To improve the applicability of the model at higher temperatures, high-temperature VLE and liquid enthalpy data for coal model compounds are necessary. 96/02412 Water pollution profile of coal washerles Gupta, R.
