he technique of interlocking nailing has almost become the norm for internal fixation of diaphyseal and metaphyseals fractures of major long bones, gradually making the single non locked nail obsolete except in treatment of simple non-comminuted diaphyseal fractures. Excellent text books and manuals, authored by surgeons from developed world, are available dealing with the technique of interlocking nailing.However,these techniques cannot be applied universally as the working conditions in our country and other developing countries may not always be optimum. This book addresses the long felt need of a text by some one from developing world considering the special conditions and the problems faced by orthopaedic surgeons in this part of the world, e.g. lack of availability of C-arm image intensifiers and quality orthopaedic operating tables at all orthopaedic centers.

will surely be of interest to practicing orthopaedic surgeons who have sweated away lot of hours trying to remove the deformed implant. This is an area which is not adequately covered in western texts and involves a lot of planning with a wide array of instrumentation, some of them specifically designed for implant removal. The chapters on ‘Asian experience’ and ‘What we did not teach in workshops’ are the ones which give a lot of practical tips on modifications of standard techniques without compromising the results. The author has described a nail designed by him and its use without image intensifier control which is quite unique. The book is well illustrated showing each and every important step with a long photo gallery (47 pages) near the end illustrating difficult cases and their results. Though there are no references at the end of each chapter, there is a list of suggested reading at the end of the book. A suggestion to the author for the next edition is that it will be worthwhile to devote a chapter to the newly developed interlocking nails for forearm bones which have been very sketchily covered in the present edition.
The chapters of the book have been systematically divided as per different fractured long bones, i.e. Tibia, Femur, Humerus. Practical tips, suggestions and ‘traps to be avoided’ towards the end of each chapter are a unique feature. There are separate chapters on dynamisation of nail and extended uses of interlocking nails. The chapter on implant removal (along with accompanying CD Rom)
This book will be an asset to the practicing orthopaedic surgeon as well as the postgraduate resident.
