The opinion section of Mechanisms of Aging and Development is a new initiative to stimulate discussion on selected topics that are of great interest to the science of aging. Their format consists of a short challenging paper, followed by several solicited responses from (other) experts in the field. The responses are not coordinated, in the sense that once they have been received, no changes are made on the basis of one of the other responses. However, additional responses, comments, and criticisms are welcome and could be published in a subsequent issue of the journal, to the discretion of the editor. Below, the first Opinion piece is presented. It discusses critically the use of the SENIEUR protocol, which was developed originally to facilitate immunogerontological studies in separating disease-related from genuine aging-related alterations. Soon it became more generally applied as a set of criteria to select human subjects for studies on aging. The question is if the SENIEUR protocol helps us to see the relationship between aging and disease more clearly or merely keeps us from seeing changes that are really relevant to aging.
