Cli&al aspects of h&edemas. Developments in Medical Virology 4. M. Revel, Ma~inus Nijhoff, Dordrecht, 1988. This book provides physicians with ettaugh reference info~ation on the appli~tion of inte~erons in specific clinical situations to prompt the use of IFN and to further explore its clinical potentials. The chapters in the first two parts of this volume, written by experts who often reported the first clinical trials on a given application, give a state-of-the-art review of what has been achieved in viral infections, immune diseases, leukemias and solid tumors. The third part discusses the important topics of toxic and sidoeffects of IFNs, pha~aco~neti~ and methods for the monito~ng of IFN therapy in man. The last six chapters describe clinically oriented research on animal models, the use of IFN inducers, targetting of IFN, and the complex intentions with the immune system, thus giving the clinician an insight into what is to come.

The next part discusses alI of the major infections, grouped by etiologic agent, t~no~n to occur in HIV-infected patients and offers specific advice regarding diagnostic techniques and therapy. Finally, there is a part on the optimal usage of laboratory services. This book focusses on the unique problems of managing opportunistic infections in HIV-infected patients. The main intention was to provide a practical approach to patient management, although basic science and pa~ophysiolo~c issues have been discussed where relevant. Hence, full details of diagnostic testing, drug dosing, and laboratory monitoring have been supplied. The authors, who are all authorities in their respective areas, bring experience in direct patient care to their writing. Leucimies aigui!s. Progr&s en HBmatologie, 10. Coordinators : R. Zittoun, B. This latest volume of Humber and Almeder’s acclaimed Biomedical Ethics Reviews series is devoted to one especially timely topic : AIDS, indisputably today’s most critical health threat. The very nature of AIDS has created a host of problems for ethicists, philosophers, healthcare professionals, theoiogians, educators, jurists and politicians. No one is unaffected by either the disease itselt or its far-reaching implications. AIDS and Ethics examines - and attempts to answer - many critical questions posed by this latter-day plague. It also probes many of the controversies involved in the understanding and management of AIDS patients, contending that disagreements have arisen because physicians and scientists - themselves human - are subject to the same fears and prejudices as laypersons and thus occasionally allow these feelings to interfere with their judgment. Chapters explore some of the most challenging issues associated with the disease, its victims and attitudes and policies, including : “AIDS and education”, contagion and spread, “stigma”‘, risk factors, “public health”, recommendations for an ethical public policy, “AIDS and dentistry”, facts and assumptions. A nought-p~vo~~g analysis of a topic with many serious ramifications, this new volume on AfiX and Ethics is essential reading for everyone, whether the healthcare professional. policymaker, ethicist, clergy, or even the concerned layperson.

This issue is the tenth of a series devoted to the recent advances in haematology and published under the direction of Pr. Robert Zittoun. He has himself edited this book with I%. B. Varet in Paris. It includes many cont~bu~ons from French-spea~ng teams involved in this rapidly-evolving field of acute leukemias in France aad Belgium. Each chapter deals mainly with the most recent advances but also discusses also their significance in the context of past knowledge and on-going studies. ‘I’he first six chapters are devoted to experimental leukaemias and to basic data in biology, immunology, cytogenetics and cytology. In a second part prognosis and treatment of the different types of acute leukaemias in adults and children are discussed. The three final chapters deal with intensive care and recent data on bone marrow graft. Each chapter is written by authors who have made significant advances in their field, -+vitha good balance between personal studies and review. Unfo~unately, a final index is laking. This book appears indispensable to all physicians confronted by patients with acute leukemias, whether they are directly involved in administering treatmeEt or following patients in relatior! with a spe~~ized service.
