evaluate and compare the effects of flumazenil on patient recovery following sedation with midazolam or propofol. All groups received an initial dose of midazolam (2 mg) and fentanyl (50/zg), but sedation was maintained with a propofol infusion in groups 1 and 2 and a midazolam infusion in groups 3 and 4. At the completion of surgery the sedative infusion was discontinued and flumazenil was administered to groups 2 and 4, and saline (placebo) to groups 1 and 3. Picture recall, digital-substitution test, and recovery times were then recorded. The authors found that midazolam sedation reversed by flumazenil is associated with a rapid recovery similar to that of propofol sedation. However, the authors concluded that this technique is more expensive and is associated with a high incidence of resedation.--S. Also included are articles on the biology of bone induction, imaging of the maxillofacial structures, and complications related to the use of implants and their management. Imaging Atlas of the Temporomandibular Joint. Heffez LB, Mafee MF, Rosenberg H. Baltimore, MD, Williams & Wilkins, 1995, 250 pages, illustrated

This book presents a detailed discussion of the role of occlusion in the etiology and treatment of disorders of the masticatory system. It emphasizes that this involves more than management of temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscle disorders, and includes problems related to periodontics, orthodontics, and operative and restorative dentistry. The concepts presented are based on clinical experience and the authors' interpretation of published and personal research.

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a neuroradiologist, and an oral and maxillofacial radiologist have combined their efforts in producing this atlas on imaging of the temporomandibular joint. It describes the various imaging techniques and illustrates their application in the analysis of internal derangements, the arthritides, ankylosis, synovial chondromatosis, infections, neoplasms, facial deformities, and fractures. The book is intended to serve as a reference in assisting clinicians in diagnosising and treating these disorders.
