T~AA~S e S O C .MINe~ R S , AIME,V260, NI, MAR .1975,P17-20 • A method is proposed for the prellmins-^y design of coal mine openin6s and pillars using existing design form~l~s. The sug~asted method incorporates geophysical and core logging techniques, as well as the structural properties of the rock. Some Of the existlng design equaticms have been simplified and are included. It is anticipated that the additional cost of rock mechanics tests sad logging work will be more thsm offset by the i~reased coal recovery that does not Jeopardize the safety of miners. Auth.

Swedish cut-and-fill mines are described with regard to locatiou, ~r~uctiou volumes~ and grades. Development goals (such ms higher Productivity and better working conditions) are presented, sad different methods of development, such as mechanization, nsw layouts, etc., are discussed. Development methods are described with exam~las from drilling, loading, hauls~e, sad rock mechanics. Special a t t e n t i o n is paid to filling techniques. Figures are given for productivity and relative costs. Auth.

Standardization of gate roadway deformatiom measurements in terms of closure, based on original roadwa~ dimensions and plotted using the face-line positio~ as the reference point, is demonstrated %0 be a convenient and meaningful method of comparing roadways in different couditions mad situations. Examples are given of how roadway deformation surveys are carried out; special attenticm is given as to how the results are treated for plotting purposes sad to a form of graphical presentation to ease recognition of the significant fazlx~-s contributing to th_- conditions encountered. Presentation and interpretation of deformation records can be used %0 assist colliery planuin~ end operations. It is coucluled that ~ ~atsta~ding feature of deformation survey records is their value to future planning, especially for later -~-~gement staff unfamiliar with previous trials at the colliery. The design of pillars around a l o r ~ panel in which the effect of the adjacent end worked-out panel is taken into consideration is discussed. A m-thematical model is used to duplicate field observaticms such as opening closure and pillar rib movement. MCNAY, LM Strength of cemented hydraulic ssaifill modified by flocculsats. 8F. US BUR.MINES,RI 8126,1976,14P. The s t r e a ~ t h characteristics of hydraulic saudfill modified by varying quantities of type IIl Portland c~/-rt and two floccul~ts were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Three different ssad-cement ratios were e ~ m l , ~ using different percentages of flocculsat. Two other experimental variables were curing time and wei~ht-~ercent solids for hydraulic mixture. Results Of unconfined compression tests with strain are discussed. Max~w,m strength was achieved with 0.5 weightpercent of ferric sulfate per ton of solids when the slurry mixture was 75 weight-percent solids. The bearing capacity of hydraulic smmdfill is red~,ced by increasing the water content and decreasing the ~ t of cement mixed with sandfill. Auth.
