The philosophy of the authors is to coordinate biologic principles with a clinical approach to periodontics and general practice. The book is outlined by notes in the margins of each page, which are very helpful as a learning device. It is divided into 10 parts: ( 1) “The periodontium and periodontal disease” discusses the histology and the histopathology of the periodontium; (2) “The oral environment” discusses saliva, microbiology, and dental deposits; (3) “Introduction to periodontal disease” discusses the etiology, classification, and nature of periodontal disease; (4) gingivitis, and periodontitis; (5) “Inflammatory periodontal disease” discusses inflammation, “Dystrophic periodontal disease” discusses periodontosis, as well as atrophic and hyperplastic periodontal conditions; (6) “Elements of therapeutic judgment” discusses examination, prognosis, treatment planning, and doctor-patient relationships; (7) “Conditions requiring immediate treatment” discusses necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, periocornitis, abscesses, and cysts; (8) a section which discusses several approaches to therapy, including root planing, curettage, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, flap procedure, reattachment operations, bone grafts and transplants, bone surgery, mucogingival surgery, and combined problems in endodontics; (9) “Traumatic periodontal diseases and their treatment” discusses the role of occlusion in periodontal disease, the treatment of periodontal trauma, and minor orthodontics; and (10) “The treated case” discusses the criteria for successful maintenance of a periodontally treated patient. The wide range of this subject material thoroughly covers the study of periodontics. It serves as a good reference source for the fundamentals but is not intended to be used for detailed study.
