This book is the latest volume in a series of annual reviews of the organometallic chemistry of silicon, tin and lead; it covers the literature for 1979. The six articles are concerned with the Synthesis and Reactivity of Organosilicon Compounds (Joyce Y. Corey, 148 pages), Organosilicon Reaction Mechanisms (Frank K. Cartledge, 57 pages), the Bonding and Structure of Organosilicon Compounds (Claude H. Yoder, 59 pages), the Application of Organosilicon Compounds to Organic Synthesis (George M. Rubottom, 148 pages), Organotin Compounds (P. G. Harrison, 106 pages) and Organolead Compounds (J. Walters and D. de Vos, 16 pages). The reviews are all carefully written; the authors have obviously tried hard to arrange a vast amount of information in a digestible order. Even so, such reviews are hard going, even to chemists working in the field, as they have to be very tightly written. In this volume, work that has been published in about 2000 papers is discussed. The real value of such books is difficult to assess. \Vho but the specialist in the field has the need, or time, to wander through such a forest of information? Certainly the chemist looking for a particular compound, say, will not find them of much help, since the only indes is one to the authors of the papers cited. Presumably there is a market, or the publishers kvould not produce reviews of this type. There can, however, be few individuals who buy their own copies. At $134.25 (13~ per page) it is a very expensive book, particularly so as it has been printed directly from typed manuscript. Finatly, the reviewer must complain about the quality - the review copy was coming to pieces when received!

Report, senior reporters, C. Kernball of Chemistry. London, 1981. pp. sii
This report covers the recent literature published up to mid-1980, in the general field of heterogeneous catalysis and in related areas of homogeneous catalysis_ The first chapter covers the design and preparation of supported catalysts by Drs. G. J. Acres. Ai. J. Bird, J. IV’. Jenkins and F. King, all from Johnson Matthey. This is an interesting chapter with an emphasis on parameters of industrial importance, such as general methods of preparation for
