The acquisition increases Osram's t o t a l worldwide sales by 70% to approximately $3.3 billion. The Sylvania b r a n d n a m e is being r e t a i n e d a n d will be used to identify m o s t of t h e company's lighting p r o d u c t s sold in North America.
H.I.P. increases high temperature capacity
to t h a t available with H.I.P.'s megaHIP unit, enabling H.I.P. to model t h e effects of rapid cool a n d develop t h e possibilities for c o m b i n e d H I P / h e a t t r e a t m e n t . The system also h a s a d e w a x i n g u n i t to dewax, sinter a n d HIP, which may be used in future m e t a l injection moulding d e v e l o p m e n t works, a n d can o p e r a t e in v a c u u m u p to 1500°C. H.I.P. says t h a t this acquisition is f u r t h e r step in t h e i n v e s t m e n t p r o g r a m m e of its p a r e n t company, Bodycote International, which h a s recently a n n o u n c e d its p u r c h a s e of I n t e r n a t i o n a l P r e s s u r e Services, a HIP c o m p a n y b a s e d in London, Ohio. INCREASED high t e m p e r a t u r e h o t isostatic pressing (HIP) facilities are now available at H.I.P. Ltd of Chesterfield, UIC The firm h a s acquired a high t e m p e r a t u r e HIP system with a furnace capacity of 200 m m d i a m e t e r a n d 300 m m long. Operating t e m p e r a t u r e s of u p to 2000°C a n d p r e s s u r e s of up to 200 MPa can be achieved in t h e new vessel. The operating volume is 20 t i m e s larger t h a n c u r r e n t capabilities for high t e m p e r a t u r e ceramic processing a t H.I.P. SIGNS t h a t t h e economy of Western Europe is c o n t i n u i n g its d o w n t u r n are reflected in t h e first analysis of its survey of industrial trends, says the E u r o p e a n Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA). The survey looked a t PM c o m p o n e n t s manufacturing and materials and equipment shipments. Some 59% of r e s p o n d e n t s from t h e c o m p o n e n t s sector reported that order books h a d fallen in t h e first q u a r t e r of 1993 c o m p a r e d w i t h t h e final q u a r t e r of 1992. This figure r o s e t o 70.5% w h e n c o m p a r e d with t h e first quart e r of 1992. The EPMA says t h a t it came as no surprise t h a t 65% of c o m p a n i e s rep o r t e d 'poor' order books with a t t e n d a n t rises in 'order cancellations' (53%) a n d 'order deferments' (59%). Prices for r a w m a t e r i a l s used in PM m a n u f a c t u r i n g are forecast to r e m a i n stable over the next three months, but t h e r e was a noticeable pressure for PM c o m p o n e n t producers to cut prices with 47% r e p o r t i n g a fall in o u t p u t prices. Almost all (88%) of the PM c o m p o n e n t s c o m p a n i e s rep o r t e d a decline in t h e number of employees, a n d 59% said t h a t s h o r t - t i m e working would be i n t r o d u c e d in t h e f i r s t q u a r t e r of 1993.

Manufacturers of t a n t a l u m capacitors have reduced prices by 4% b u t fear t h a t strong competition may result in f u r t h e r cuts. Large c o n s u m e r s have dem a n d e d reductions of 10% in t h e price of t a n t a l u m powder, which h a s not occurred before. According to t h e Ministry of Finance t h e average unit price of i m p o r t s of t a n t a l u m raw materials from t h e USA was ¥9058/tonne during January to July 1992, c o m p a r e d with ¥ 1 0 7 0 3 / t o n n e in 1990. The fall in price in 1992 is t h e result of a p p r e c i a t i o n of t h e yen against t h e dollar.
