Recent Publications 503 Injury in America: A Continuing Public Health Problem. Committee on Trauma Research. National Academy Press, Washington, D.C., USA, 1985, 164 pp. ISBN 0-30903545-7. An Act of Congress passed in 1983 allowed the formation of the Trauma Research Committee, chaired by W. H. Foege of the Centers for Disease Control, with Susan Baker of The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health as Vice-Chairman. This report is the result of the Committee's deliberations. It has produced a strong and comprehensive statement of the problem of traumatic injury and suggested a number of possible remedies. Following the executive summary, the report examines epidemiological features of the problem of injuries, the prevention of accidents, biomechanics and its role in the prevention of injury, the treatment of injuries, and rehabilitation. The report examines theory and existing knowledge in each of these areas, and outlines the research and administrative support needed for further progress. Finally, the Committee addresses :ssues of funding and the appropriate administration of injury-related research. The problems are common to all kinds of trauma regardless of cause; the report avoids the imbalance that can occur when too many examples are drawn from one type of accident. It makes a clear and strong appeal for more financial support for research, ~tnd in particular for the establishment of a center for injury control as part of the Center tor Disease Control.
