Otoplastiek/Otoplasty Edited by Weruer Heppt, Ralf Siegert, Claus Walter and Hilko Weerda. Springer Verlag, Heidelberg, 2001. ISBN 3-540-14864-7. Price DM 199.90, s US$110.00. This is an excellent short CD ROM, which, I presume, is aimed principally at trainees. As an absolute technophobe, I managed to browse the disk, and I was impressed by the authors' thoroughness. The structure is well designed, so that information can be found quickly and with ease. The quality of the illustrations is good, and they complement the text well. The disk claims to provide everything that is needed in daily practice, including tips and tricks, do's and don'ts, and complication management. It certainly provides an excellent overview of the ear, including a good section on anatomy and embryology, a classification of ear deformities, the history of ear reconstruction, and a vast array of surgical techniques to correct
the majority of the problems encountered. As an overview of how to manage patients with prominent ears, it is an excellent piece of work. It is thorough in how to examine and advise patients, and the small video snippets of surgeons carrying out procedures take the trainee into a new dimension not achievable in a book. The section on complications is especially important for trainees. The small video clip in the embryology section, which shows how the two branchial arch hillocks transform themselves into an ear, was also very impressive. The section on ear reconstruction is not quite so thorough, and really conveys only the basics. The disk could be improved by showing how the framework is constructed from its component parts, and how a postauricular sulcus is created in a second stage. The alternative to autogenous reconstruction, the boneanchored prosthesis, is not mentioned at all. The correction of prominent ears at birth by splintage is also omitted. Overall, the general presentation is excellent. There is an extensive and useful bibliography. From the price, it is probably aimed at institutions rather than individuals, but it represents reasonable value for money. As most trainee plastic surgeons are now using computers in structured learning, this CD ROM would be an excellent addition to the library, and I have no hesitation in recommending it.
