Oral Presentation Conclusions: The TMF is a reliable, versatile and alternative option for oncologic palatomaxillary reconstruction with satisfactory functional and aesthetic outcomes and minimal complications, especially when appropriately selected for those medically compromised patients. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijom.2015.08.498 Overexpression of metabolic markers PKM2 and LDH5 correlates with aggressive clinicopathological features and adverse patients’ prognosis in tongue cancer C. Yuan, Z. Li, J. Cheng ∗ Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu, PR China Background: Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) and lactate dehydrogenase 5 (LDH5) are two metabolic markers of cancer, which are frequently overexpressed in human cancers. Objectives: In the present study, we sought to investigate their expression patterns and prognostic values in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). Methods: The expression and subcellular localization of PKM2 and LDH5 in TSCC cell lines were determined by western blot and immunofluorescence. PKM2 and LDH5 abundances were examined by immunohistochemistry in 63 TSCC tumor specimens. Their associations with multiple clinicopathological parameters and patients’ overall survival were further assessed. Findings: The protein levels of PKM2 and LDH5 were both significantly higher in TSCC cells than those in immortalized oral epithelial cell line. Overexpression of PKM2 significantly associated with cervical node metastasis (P = 0.0373), while elevated LDH5 significantly correlated with tumor size (P = 0.0094), pathological grade (P = 0.0052), cervical node metastasis (P = 0.0023) and clinical stage (P = 0.0024). Patients with either increased PKM2 or LDH5 expression displayed remarkably reduced overall survival, while patients with both overexpression indicated the worst prognosis with lowest overall survival. Furthermore, PKM2 and LDH5 were identified as critical independent prognostic predictors for TSCC patients’ overall survival. Conclusions: Our data indicate that overexpression of PKM2 and LDH5 associates with key clinicopathological features and unfavorable prognosis in TSCC. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijom.2015.08.499 Recurring infection of pre-auricular sinus in a Vietnamese girl S. Discussion: PS has a female predilection, with the most widely accepted proposed etiopathogenesis theory to include the result of incomplete defective fusion the auricular trabeculae. Symptomatic cases with recurrent infections require complete surgical excision to provide a definitive cure with complete removal of epithelial lining. The presentation of PS at the time of surgery is a key factor. Abscess formation compromises the outcome and increases the recurrence rate. Conclusion: PS should be considered a differential diagnosis of any swelling or infection adjacent to the helix in all age groups. Good surgical technique is paramount to ensure a successful and satisfactory patient outcome without recurrence. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ijom.2015.08.500 Infant oral mutilation: fiction, myths and facts S. Background: Infant oral mutilation (IOM) is a primitive traditional practice involving the gouging out of and infant’s healthy primary teeth buds without anaesthesia, possibly leading to anaemia, septicaemia, tetanus and transmission of blood–borne diseases such as HIV/AIDS. It can on occasion be fatal. Other complications include eradication and/or malformation of the child’s permanent dentition. Myths: IOM is usually performed by village healers, priests and midwives as an accepted remedy for illness such as diarrhoea, fevers. The normal gingival swelling of the unerupted teeth mistakenly thought to indicate the presence of ‘tooth worms’. Crude methods are employed using unsterile tools namely bicycle spokes, hot nails and knives. Fact: IOM is reported to be practiced in African countries, including Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, DR Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. More recently, as a result of global mobilisation, IOM has been reported in immigrants living in France, Israel, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Norway and the UK. Conclusion: Such brutal practices can be avoided; in remote villages this can be difficult to action. There is a need for clinicians in the developed world to be aware of the possibility of seeing its consequences in their patients.

Oral and Maxillofacial Head and Neck Surgery, Homerton University Hospital, London, UK 2 Oral and Maxillofacial Head and Neck Surgery, St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital, London, UK Background: Pre-auricular sinus (PS) is a congenital abnormality of the pre-auricular soft tissue in children with varying incidence worldwide; 0.9% (UK), 0.1–0.9% (USA), 1.6–2.5% (Taiwan) to 4–10% (Africa). Case report: We present a three and a half year old Vietnamese girl with recurring infection of her right pre-auricular region leading to multiple discharging sinuses from a deep seated abscess. She required repeated evacuation of the perforated PS. On the third attempt, the complete removal of the tortuous out and extensive network of the sinus was preformed successfully.
