Oxea unveils range of non-VOC, phthalate-free plasticizers
G
ermany’s Oxea has launched a range of phthalate-free and non-VOC plasticizers under the new brand name Oxsoft, in order to support the increasing market shift towards these types of products. According to the company, Oxsoft products can be used to replace traditional phthalate plasticizers in a broad variety of end uses such as automotive, construction, food and medical applications. Oxsoft plasticizers show ‘best-in-class performance compared with traditional phthalates’ and have a similar price range, according to Jacco de Haas, Oxea’s global marketing manager for speciality esters. The company is ‘committed to support the significant growth of phthalate-free plasticizers’ by introducing new products and investing in new production capacity, adds Miguel Mantas, the company’s board member responsible for sales and marketing. In addition, Oxea is integrated in key raw materials for this product range, such as 2-ethylhexanol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid, which enables it to offer high standards regarding product quality, delivery performance and reliability, the company says. More information on Oxsoft products and their applications together with a detailed comparison against conventional products are available at a new website: www.phthalate-free-plasticizers.com. Established in 2007 as the result of a buyout of assets and a joint venture from Celanese and Evonik, Oxea is a global manufacturer of oxo intermediates and oxo derivatives. The company posted strong sales of E377 million in 1Q 2011, a 30% increase year on year, and net income of E30 million, up from E13 million for 1Q 2010.

Additives for Polymers
Dow teams up with PolyOne for PLA impact modifier, expands Engage range
D
ow Plastics Additives, a division of Dow Chemical, has joined forces with PolyOne Corp to introduce OnCap™ BIO L masterbatch, which is claimed to improve production efficiencies for bioplastics used in packaging applications. Dow has also introduced a new grade of polyolefin elastomer for automotive TPOs. Launched jointly by the two companies at Interpack 2011, PolyOne’s OnCap BIO L masterbatch is based on Paraloid BPM-520, an impact modifier manufactured by Dow that helps improve the room and sub-zero temperature impact resistance of opaque, injection-moulded polylactic acid (PLA) products with minimal effect on heat distortion temperature and stiffness, the companies say. It is also reported to offer benefits in PLA blends such as PLA/PC. In addition, Dow has selected PolyOne as its exclusive European formulator for converters seeking ready-to-use formulations with Paraloid BPM-520. According to the companies, the OnCap BIO L additive masterbatch broadens the choices available to brand owners looking to use sustainable polymers in applications such as opaque ice cream and food packaging, credit and gift cards, and semidurable applications such as cosmetic packaging and housing for laptops or mobile phones. Converters will appreciate OnCap BIO L’s excellent flow properties and ability to maintain part stiffness, while brand owners will welcome its colourability and attractive surface finish, the partners says. Both the masterbatch and the impact modifier can be used in compliance with Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastics materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements. ‘Brand owners are always on the lookout for products that offer improved environmental performance to keep up with consumer demand – but they don’t want to compromise on end-use performance and need to maintain a cost-competitive and efficient production process’, explains Robin Madgwick, marketing manager for Dow Plastic Additives. Dow has worked closely with PolyOne to offer an ‘effective impact modifier that can be made available in user-friendly, pre-dispersed formats’ that can help further extend the use of bio-based PLA resins into
