The possible role of fat cells in the pathogenesis of erythema nodosum-like lesions of Beh~et's disease: an immunoelectron microscopic study Dongsik Bang ~, Sung Hyang Son 2, Sungnack Lee 2 The most frequent skin lesions in our cases of Behqet's disease (BD) were those of the erythema nodosum-like type and papulopustular eruptions. Although the pathogenesis of the erythema nodosum-like lesions of BD is not clear, delayed-type hypersensitivity has been suggested by the immunologic findings of skin lesions. We have recently reported that the appearance of lymphocyte-macrophage-fat-cell adhesion and fat-cell lysis was observed in the lobules of the subcutaneous fat of the erythema nodosum-like lesions of BD. In this study, biopsies of erythema nodosum-like lesions were performed in 8 patients with BD. All patients manifested at least three of the four cardinal signs of BD: oral

ulceration, genital ulceration, uveitis, and erythema nodosum-like lesions. The biopsy specimens were obtained within one to four days after the initial clinical manifestation of the erythematous tender nodules on the lower extremities. As controls, normal tissues were obtained from the opposite, uninvolved sites in 4 of the 8 patients. The sections were examined by immunoelectronmicroscopy using protein A-gold, and special attention was paid to the change of fat cells and the gold deposits on fat droplets. Visual prognosis in an algerian population with Beh~et's recurrent uveitis L. Bedairia 1, M. Djennas 1, D. HartanF, M.S. HadjP, M. Talbi 3 We studied 90 Beh~et's patients with ocular involvement during a 5 year follow-up period. This population consists of 85 men, 5 women with a mean age of 35 years (ranged from 10 to 58 years old).

At the end of the study, the vision was (on a scale from 0.1 to 1): (1) light perception in 20 eyes, (2) 0.05 in 46 eyes, (3) from 0.1 to 0.5 in 50 eyes, (4) from 0.5 to 1 in 64 eyes. Visual prognosis did not appear to be related to the type of treatment.

Various therapeutic regimens were utilized and consisted of either isolated prednisone therapy (70 patients) or combination of prednisone and cytotoxic agents (cyclophosphamide in 10 patients, chlorambucil in 10 patients).

63% of eyes kept an usefull vision better than 0.1, and 33 % of eyes had a vision better than 0.5 after the 5 year follow-up period.

Visual loss was observed in 54 eyes after a 5 year followup period.
