W.J. ElliotL,*S.J. Toth,A. Sterner,J. Cadwefader, for the Inland/United Steelworkers of America Healthcare Network. Department of Preventive Medicine, RushPresbyterian-St.Luke’sMedicefCenter,Chicago,IL RecentdatafromNHANES-IIIB suggestthatdetection andtreatment of hypertension isimproving, butonly27.4% of Americanhypertensives achievedcontrolledblood pressure(BPc 140andc 90 mmHg).To assessthe degree of bloodpressurecontrol in a groupof steelworkersand their families whose health care is financed by a large corporation,a random sample of 792 adults (age > 18 years,average55+1years,50.4%male)was selectedfrom a roster of patientswhowereknown(fromclaimsdata) to have visited a physician in 1995-96. Office charts were reviewedby trainednurses, who abstracteddates of 4095 visits, 3352B r a 3 ep m ra e Filledprescriptionswereidentifiedfrom54,689s claims for pharmacyservices. Hypertension, defined(per NHANES)as more than 1 BP of 140/90or higher, or taking antihypertensive medication, was found in 437 (55%). At least one antihypertensive medication was prescribed for 386 (88%) of the hypertensive; only 10 failed to have any prescription for antihypertensive medicationfilled. Controlledhypertension,as definedby HEDIS3.5 (average BP c 140 and c 90 mm Hg in the office during a yeadong period of observation), was observedin 189patients (45%of total sample,or 50% of the 382 withat least 1 recordedBP measurement). These datasuggestthatin thispopulationcoveredby ajointfyrun employer-union heafthbenefitsplan,HealthyPeople2000’s BP goal (at least 50% of hypertensiveshavingBPs under controlbytheturnof thecentury)maybe achievedaheadof K
